This year is ending as one of the least deadly for police officers in decades. As of Tuesday, Dec. 31, statistics from the Officer Down Memorial Page, which tracks the deaths of officers in the U.S. and its territories, indicate that 131 police officers have died in 2019 โ the lowest annual total since 1959, when 122 were killed. โIt is because of improved equipment, training and vigilance โ together with the incredible work of heroic trauma teams at hospitals nationwide โ that the numbers arenโt growing,โ Jim Pasco, the executive director of the National Fraternal Order of Police, told Fox News.

The wind - of all things - toppled a New York City wind turbine which then crushed an unoccupied parked car, according to reports. The incident Monday afternoon in the Bronx had elected officials who represent the area shaking their heads. โA wind turbine should not be able to be taken down by the wind,โ the New York Post quoted Jamaal Bailey, who serves in the New York State Senate, as saying. The wind turbine was erected recently atop a six-story parking garage, according to reports. No injuries were reported, according to Fox 5 New York. The station reported the wind turbine went up only two weeks ago. On the way down, the wind turbine also struck an electronic billboard that has been the subject of lawsuits involving the billboardโs owner and the New York City Buildings Department, according to the station. With the New York Police Department set to monitor New Year's Eve celebrations in Times Square via drone for the very first time this evening, authorities claim the iconic New York ball drop will be the 'safest place on Earth' to see in the new decade. Thousands of plainclothes and uniformed police officers will be on duty for Tuesday night's festivities, along with specialized units armed with long guns, bomb-sniffing dogs and a series of various other safety measures. But in what is considered a historic first, police drones are expected to take to the sky to keep an aerial watch on the hundreds of thousands of revelers expected to attend the big, confetti-filled celebration later this evening. #NYPD #K9
