The Los Angeles County Sheriffβs Department pays homage to over half a million American Service Members who have suffered imprisonment under wartime conditions on #FormerPOWRecognitionDay. National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day was first observed in 1988 when proclaimed by President Ronald Reagan.
These brave heroes remind us of the grave costs of war and the potential sacrifices we ask of those who fight for us. We are reminded of our solemn duty to serve our former prisoners of war, their families, and all Veterans as well as they have served us. It is our responsibility to ensure they will never be forgotten.

Tonight, I had the immense honor in swearing in the newest LASD Academy Class 472. I commended them all in pursuing what I believe is one of the most noble professions in the world.
I reminded them all that their career in law enforcement will undoubtedly have its challenges, its tough days, its good times, and moments of great pride, satisfaction, and success. With these daily emotions comes a bondβa bond with one another within LASDβ¦and across all of law enforcement.
Each Police Officer and Deputy Sheriff will soon have the unique opportunity and privilege to keep our communities safe and help the people who need it the most in what could be their darkest hour where we will be the light.
Congratulations to each and everyone of you, and I wish you all the best of luck in your careers moving forward.

On behalf of Sheriff Robert G. Luna and all of our LASD family, we offer our sincerest condolences to Officer McKinneyβs family and to the entire Memphis Police Department.
During todayβs early morning hours, three Memphis Police Officers were shot while responding to a suspicious vehicle call. Two officers survived this senseless act of violence, but tragically Officer McKinney succumbed to his injuries.
Officer McKinney had served with the Memphis Police Department for over 4 years and leaves behind a family who will miss him dearly.

Yesterday, Assistant Sheriff Myron Johnson and Special Victims Bureau Captain Richard Ruiz, along with DCFS personnel, hosted the 38th annual "999 for Kids" ice cream social. Department members and various associations raised over $51,000 to support the foundation, with an additional $6,000 coming from other associations.
The program funds the purchase of special items and services for children, including sport wheelchairs, computers, special education classes, and medically oriented toys and games. It also supports sending children to summer camps for the deaf, blind, and those with other medical issues who would not otherwise have such opportunities.
During the event, some of the children from the program were recognized and expressed their gratitude to the donors.
Captain Ruiz also presented Eduardo Rodriguez with a $1,000 scholarship check and a "999 For Kids" plaque. Eduardoβs art design was selected from the dozens of submissions to the LA County Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) during this year's annual "999 For Kids" Art Design Contest. As the winning designer, Eduardo received a $1,000 scholarship and a plaque featuring his design.
Several other artists were acknowledged and received checks from the foundation in recognition of their skills and efforts.
#LASD units and other donors who generously contributed to "999 For Kids" this year will receive a recognition plaque bearing Eduardoβs artwork.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deeply mourns and pays tribute to Deputy Rosemary Iris May.
On September 26, 1989, Deputy May was driving an unmarked LASD vehicle to process a crime scene in Lancaster. A person driving a car at a high rate of speed failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with Deputy Mayβs vehicle. Deputy May was rushed by an ambulance to the A.V. Medical Center in Lancaster, where she was pronounced dead on arrival.
Deputy May joined the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department on Aug. 22, 1968, and served as an "Off the Streeter," a deputy who was assigned to clerical work "off the street" until assigned to an Academy class. Throughout her career in law enforcement, Deputy May worked many assignments, including the Sheriff's Pistol Team, where she won several awards for her marksmanship.
In January 1985, she transferred to the identification section of the crime lab (Scientific Services Bureau) and developed expertise in fingerprint identification and crime scene investigation.
Today, we honor her memory and hold her forever in our hearts.
