WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT! Roxboro, North Carolina — The Person County district attorney released dash camera footage of an officer-involved #shooting on July 24, that left a 45-year-old man dead. The man fatally shot by a Roxboro police officer appears to have pointed a gun at the officer, dash-camera footage from the officer’s car shows. On Friday, July 24, David Brooks Jr. was shot once in the chest by Roxboro police responded to a 911 call reporting an armed man, officials said. In the video, an officer stops his car and turns on his blue lights. Brooks appears to raise a gun as officers tell him to drop the gun three times. Within minutes, an officer fired one shot into David Brooks Junior’s chest. Police Chief David Hess said a loaded-sawed off shotgun was found at the scene. (Read the full story.)

The only Native American on federal death row is scheduled to be executed in late August, the U.S. government announced Wednesday. Navajo man Lezmond Mitchell, 37, is set to die on August 26 by lethal injection at the Federal Correctional Complex in Terra Haute, Indiana, where he's being held. If it proceeds it will be the first time in modern American history the government executed a Native American tribe member. Under federal law, the U.S. government cannot pursue a death sentence for a capital murder committed on Native American land without the tribe's consent. However, tribal officials and even the victims' family have opposed the death penalty. Mitchell was convicted in the murders of Navajo woman Alyce Slim, 63, and her nine-year-old granddaughter in October 2001 on the reservation that extends into Arizona, New Mexico and Utah.

A magnitude 4.2 earthquake rattled southern California early Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter of the quake struck the San Fernando Valley, just north of Los Angeles, around 4:30 a.m. local time at a depth of 4.3 miles. A second 3.3 magnitude temblor struck the area about eight minutes later. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The shaking was felt in Santa Clarita, 8.8 miles northwest of the epicenter, and 11.2 miles southeast in Burbank.esidents in the Los Angeles area, including celebrities, took to social media to report the quake shook them out of bed.

Three Ohio children were among five family members found dead in a home early Wednesday, an incident police are investigating as an apparent murder-suicide. Officers in Elyria, a city about 30 miles west of Cleveland, responded to the home around 8:11 a.m. to conduct a welfare check, the department said in a press release. Five bodies were found inside. Investigators determined the deceased were all family members. While police have not released what caused their deaths, FOX8 Cleveland spoke with sources who said detectives are investigating it as an apparent murder-suicide. The three children were all siblings, Elyria City Schools said in a statement on Facebook. They were between the ages of 6 and 12.

Three Chicago police officers were shot Thursday morning while taking a violent carjacking suspect into custody outside a police station on the city’s West Side. The suspect also was shot after the gunfire erupted around 9:40 a.m. in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood outside the 25th District police station, Chicago Police Supt. David Brown said. The suspect fired multiple gunshots at police during the arrest, Brown said, striking several officers. One officer suffered a gunshot wound to his chin and neck, and also was hit in his bulletproof vest, Brown said. A second officer was struck in the vest. A third officer suffered a gunshot wound to his hip. Two other officers suffered chest pains and were hospitalized. The first officer was rushed to Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Dr. Stephen Kingsley, a trauma surgeon, told reporters the officer was given a breathing tube and doctors were working to stabilize him. The four other officers were being treated at Loyola Hospital, Brown said.
