A battle over gun control in Virginia with national implications is heating up as the legislature prepares to vote on sweeping new restrictions and localities band together to defy them in growing numbers, FOX News reports. Virginians turned out to debate the measures and other issues at public budget hearings on Thursday, less than a week before the General Assembly's first legislative session of 2020. Both the Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL) and Gun Owners of America specifically warned about Democratic Gov. Ralph Northam's related budget proposal, which directs $250,000 for the Department of Corrections to incarcerate people as a result of new restrictions.

In the wake of increased tensions in the Middle East after President Donald Trump ordered the killing of top Iranian General Qasem Soleimani, the United States will send about 3,000 more soldiers to the Middle East to bolster existing forces, USA Today reports. The troops will be sent to Kuwait as an appropriate and precautionary measure in response to increased threat levels, a Pentagon spokesperson said. The soldiers will come from the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. According to the Associated Press, 14,000 U.S. troops have been deployed to the Middle East since May. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said Friday morning that the airstrike on Soleimani's convoy had come in response to an "imminent attack." "He was actively planning in the region," he said.
Sixteen inmates are dead after a "friendly" prisons soccer match between rival drug cartel members descended into a bloodbath. Prisoners were armed with weapons, including guns. During the New Year's Eve fight that left five others wounded and unfolded while family members, including children, watched. Members of Mexico's rival Gulf and Los Zetas cartels were playing in the soccer and it later emerged that an escape bid was foiled during the violence, local media reported. (WARNING 21+) The Phoenix Police Department on Thursday released tense body camera footage of officers fatally shooting an armed and apparently suicidal suspect this summer. The footage from cameras worn by two officers who fired their weapons is part of a 15-minute “critical incident briefing” video covering a Sept. 9 shooting near Thunderbird Road and 43rd Avenue. Hector Miranda Jr., 47, was carrying a knife and handgun, which turned out to be a replica after police responded to reports that he’d stabbed his mother in the head. “He’s saying he wants to commit suicide and he’s walking toward me,” one of the officers can be heard saying in the video. The officer yelled at Miranda to stop walking and drop the weapon. When Miranda didn’t comply, two officers fired multiple times. Police eventually apprehended Miranda, who died after being taken to a hospital. No officers were injured during the incident. 🔫👮🏻♂️ #shooting
An Ohio sheriff was shooting video of New Year’s Eve celebratory gunfire when a bullet hit his cruiser, struck him in his chest and bounced off his bullet-proof vest. It’s unclear where the round came from that struck Allen County Sheriff Matt Treglia and narrowly missed the face of one of his commanders, Major Todd Mohler, who was sitting in the driver’s seat. Treglia wasn’t hurt. Treglia released the 30-second video in which multiple gunshots are heard followed by the sound of a bullet striking the cruiser.
An armed suspect who allegedly held a woman hostage at a credit union branch in Illinois surrendered Friday night following a six-hour standoff with police, according to reports. The situation in Rockford, about 90 minutes northwest of Chicago, started Friday afternoon when the suspect entered the Heritage Credit Union and demanded that everyone leave, authorities said. The woman, who worked at the bank, was unable to get out and the suspect barricaded the two of them inside while negotiators tried to deescalate the standoff without injuries. Personnel from the #FBI made contact with the suspect during the standoff while a #SWAT team held a perimeter around the credit union. “It is unfortunate when situations like this occur," Special Agent Emmerson Buie Jr. said, according to the Chicago Tribune. "However, it is great that the situation was resolved without anyone being seriously injured.” 👮🏻♂️

An FBI evidence team searched an Idaho home Friday tied to a couple believed to be part of a doomsday cult who are on the run amid the mysterious disappearance of two children. According to local media, the team carried out a search warrant with local law enforcement at the home of Chad Daybell, whose wife died in October shortly after the two children -- Joshua Vallow, 7, and Tylee Ryan, 17 disappeared more than three months ago. “Today members of our Evidence Response Team are in Rexburg assisting with evidence collection,” FBI spokeswoman Sandra Yi Barker told Fox 13 Salt Lake City.

French police fired tear gas on Saturday in low-level clashes in the center of Paris with demonstrators protesting government plans to overhaul the country’s pension system. Police briefly used the tear gas in the city’s Bastille area and at the Gare de l’Est railway station after demonstrators, who were joined by “Yellow Vests” anti-government activists, tried to enter the station complex.
