Hurricane Dorian made landfall in the Northwestern Bahamas Sunday afternoon as a Category 5 and descended with fury - snapping trees, ripping the roofs off of homes with 185mph winds and 220mph gusts, and sending waves crashing onto the street. Dorian made landfall in Elbow Cay in the Abacos Islands at 12.40pm ET, creating 'catastrophic' conditions, and made a second landfall at 2pm on the Great Abaco Island, according to the National Hurricane Center. 'This is a life-threatening situation. Residents there should take immediate shelter. Do not venture into the eye if it passes over your location,' the NHC said in an advisory after landfall. As the eyewall of the storm hit the island, it bent utility poles and snapped trees and beat buildings with the howling wind. Bahamian Prime Minister Hubert Minnis announced Sunday parts of Marsh Harbor - a town of more than 6,000 - appeared to be 'underwater', sending desperate locals onto their roofs for shelter from the floodwaters. πͺπ¦π±

Nine new gun laws loosening restrictions in Texas took effect on Sunday, the day after at least seven people were killed in a mass shooting near Odessa and Midland. The newly-imposed legislation gives Texans more opportunities to have firearms and store ammunition in public places and loosens restrictions on the places guns are permitted, including in churches, public schools and foster homes. The measures applauded by the National Rifle Association were signed into law by Gov Greg Abbott after the most recent legislative session, which ended in June. They were already set to take effect September 1, less than one month after a massacre at an El Paso Walmart left 22 dead and hours after another mass shooting in West Texas left seven dead and 19 injured. #NRA

Hurricane Dorian has brought a 'historic tragedy' to the Bahamas after stalling over the islands for 40 hours and pounding them with ferocious winds and surging seawaters that destroyed thousands of homes and left at least five people dead. The Category 5 storm flooded the islands of Abaco and Grand Bahama with walls of water that lapped into the second floors of buildings, trapped people in attics and drowned the Grand Bahama airport under six feet of water. People were forced to flee the floodwaters from one shelter to another amid reports of a five-month-old baby stranded on a roof and a woman with six grandchildren who cut a hole to escape. At least five people died and 21 injured people were airlifted to the capital by the U.S. Coast Guard, Bahamas officials said. The National Hurricane Center shared a photo mapping out Hurricane Dorian's possible path, with the storm reaching Florida on Tuesday πͺ

Florida is bracing for the impact of Hurricane Dorian today as gusty winds and heavy rain start to lash the U.S. coast. After battering the Bahamas, Dorian is due to move 'dangerously close' to the Florida shore on Tuesday, bringing storm surges, 120mph winds and possibly tornadoes. Thousands have been ordered to flee their homes and more than 9,500 people have taken cover in shelters across the state with many shops and houses boarded up. Although Dorian has weakened, it remains a menacing Category 3 hurricane and could cause highly dangerous storm surges even if it does not make landfall on the U.S. coast. While it the storm is expected to stay offshore, experts have warned that 'only a small deviation' would be needed to bring it towards the mainland. Today Disney World announced it was closing early, shutting its doors at 3pm on Tuesday, amid fears that Orlando could come into Dorian's path if it veers off course. Orlando Airport is also closed. πͺ
