Nine new gun laws loosening restrictions in Texas took effect on Sunday, the day after at least seven people were killed in a mass shooting near Odessa and Midland. The newly-imposed legislation gives Texans more opportunities to have firearms and store ammunition in public places and loosens restrictions on the places guns are permitted, including in churches, public schools and foster homes. The measures applauded by the National Rifle Association were signed into law by Gov Greg Abbott after the most recent legislative session, which ended in June. They were already set to take effect September 1, less than one month after a massacre at an El Paso Walmart left 22 dead and hours after another mass shooting in West Texas left seven dead and 19 injured. #NRA

The National Rifle Association has been branded 'sickening' by Democrats after the gun rights organization published a video encouraging people to stockpile weapons amid the coronavirus pandemic. The four-minute long video features breast-cancer survivor Carletta Whiting who is also disabled. During the course of the video she speaks of her worry that the government will eventually 'lose control' and not be able to protect individual citizens, and urges people to arm themselves. In Whiting's video, she argues that just stocking up with food will not be enough. #NRA

"The NRA is not here to be popular in Washington, D.C. The NRA exists to represent the millions of members and gun owners who want their right to keep and bear arms defended."
