An off-duty New York city police officer killed himself on Wednesday, adding to a troubling increase in death by suicides within the New York City Police Department. The officer with more than 25 years of service, whose name was not immediately released, became the ninth NYPD officer to die by suicide this year, authorities said. Officials said he shot himself in the head at his home in Queens just after 6 p.m. He was rushed to a hospital in Manhasset, where he was pronounced dead. The department tweeted out the news, offering resources and support to anyone who may be struggling with mental health. 😱👮🏻‍♂️

On January 6th, 2019 at around 8:30 a.m, officers responded to a trespassing call in the 400 block of Nebraska St. Officers Hollis and Hendrix speak to the 911 caller on-scene. They search the property and find a hole in the side of the storage shed but find no sign of the trespasser. They continue to search the property and spot the suspect now identified as 49-year-old Edward Gonzales emerging from behind a portable building. As officers located Gonzales and tried to detain him, he produced a knife. The officers ordered Gonzales multiple times to put down the weapon, but the suspect didn’t comply.🔫👮🏻‍♂️ #shooting
