The NYPD officer killed in Monday’s Midtown Manhattan mass shooting has been identified as Didarul Islam, 36 — a nearly four-year veteran of the force, husband, and father of two with a third child on the way.

Officer Islam was off-duty but in uniform, working a security detail for Rudin Management at 345 Park Avenue, when he was shot and killed by 27-year-old gunman Shane D. Tamura.

Islam had served with the 47th Precinct in the Bronx since 2021. His wife is currently eight months pregnant, and the couple shared two young sons.

NEW: The man suspected of gunning down a New York Police Department officer and wounding four others in a violent shooting spree has been identified as Shane Tamura — a former student of Golden Valley High School in Santa Clarita and Granada Hills Charter High School in Los Angeles, California, according to the New York Post and Sports Illustrated.

Tamura, a resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, reportedly drove cross-country armed with an assault rifle before opening fire in Midtown Manhattan, according to NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch. The shooting claimed the life of an NYPD officer and left four others wounded. Tamura fatally shot himself following the attack, police said.

Investigators are working to determine what led Tamura to carry out the deadly assault. During today’s press conference, Tisch said Tamura had a documented history of mental illness.

“I cannot speak for any prior law enforcement contact he may have had,” Tisch stated. “I can say that our partners in Las Vegas made us aware of a mental health history — just two weeks ago.”

Key News Network has captured ground and aerial footage of Golden Valley and Granada Hills Charter high schools as part of its continuing coverage of Tamura’s background and ties to Southern California. Tamura was previously interviewed by the Los Angeles Daily News, according to the New York Post. Tamura also has a football profile from Golden Valley High School in Santa Clarita.

Authorities are continuing to piece together Tamura’s timeline, travels, and possible motives as both New York and Nevada agencies collaborate on the investigation.
