🇺🇸 Texas prosecutor resigns amid criticism over handling of the 2019 Walmart mass shooting
A Texas prosecutor facing mounting criticism over the handling of the 2019 Walmart mass shooting in El Paso that killed 23 people resigned after the county took the extraordinary step of seeking to remove her from elected office.
El Paso County District Attorney Yvonne Rosales, a Democrat who was elected in 2020, agreed to resign during a court hearing on Nov 28. Her last day will be Dec 14.
Rosales' job was put in jeopardy over accusations of incompetence involving hundreds of criminal cases in El Paso and slowing down the case against Patrick Crusius, the suspected Walmart shooter who faces the death penalty if convicted. He has pleaded not guilty.
El Paso County Attorney Jo Anne Bernal wrote last week in an amended petition that when it came to the Walmart shooting, Rosales' office "could not even tell the court what work had been done on this case in the last few months."

🇺🇸 Texas Republican proposes to ban minors from social media
Texas Republican State Rep. Jared Patterson has introduced HB 896 which would require social media users to be at least 18-years old in order to open a social media account.
Once approved, the bill would force social media companies to verify a user’s age with a photo ID while also allowing parents to request their child’s accounts be removed from the sites.
Wouldn’t it be better to make social media users undergo IQ-tests and logic problems? It is not the age that matters.

🇺🇸 Texas judge tosses first lawsuit filed under abortion ban
Bexar County Judge Aaron Haas dismissed a lawsuit filed by Chicago attorney Felipe Gomez against Dr. Alan Braid of San Antonio, after the doctor wrote that he had intentionally violated the state’s abortion law just days after it took effect in September.
In the opinion piece published Sept. 18, Braid wrote that he performed the procedure on a woman more than six weeks into her pregnancy “because I had a duty of care to this patient, as I do for all patients, and because she has a fundamental right to receive this care.”

🇺🇸 Texas school district that removed LGBTQ+ books faces federal probe
The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights is opening an investigation into Granbury Independent School District in Texas after the superintendent ordered that school libraries remove any books dealing with LGBTQ+ topics in January.
“I acknowledge that there are men that think they’re women and there are women that think they’re men,” Superintendent Jeremy Glenn said at the meeting with district librarians then. “I don’t have any issues with what people want to believe, but there’s no place for it in our libraries.”
As a result, 130 titles were taken off library shelves. Later, a committee voted to return most of them. This month, it was announced that its Office for Civil Rights would begin investigating the district, which is located near Fort Worth, for possible violation of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, a federal law banning sex discrimination in education.
