The first lady teamed the dark brown poncho-style dress with black, high-heeled boots and a dark brown Hermes handbag as she boarded Marine One at the White House Friday. She later changed into a black dress and heels and was greeted by supporters in West Palm Beach, right top and bottom. The couple held hands, left, as they jetted off ahead of the long weekend but there was no sign of son Barron. Melania made the trip to the Florida estate in the midst of the shutdown and spent the majority of the holidays there even though the president canceled his Christmas plans. The president announced a national emergency on the border Friday to get $8 billion for his wall. He also signed a bill to avoid a second government shutdown after a bitter standoff with Congress.

A Philadelphia real estate investor said a home he was scoping out came with an unadvertised surprise - a stairway booby-trapped with a swinging knife. Ekrem Uysaler said he and his team made the startling discovery while they were touring a 'distressed home' in Southwest Philadelphia on January 2 to figure out what kind of renovations would need to be done to it. As they were walking around, one of the team members spotted what appeared to be a fishing wire positioned on a staircase. The wire was attached to the wall opposite the handrail and ran along a stair before heading upwards, out of sight. Several of the stairs, meanwhile, were purposely strewn with a layer of broken bottle shards. 😱 #fools

BBC Radio 4 presenter Kirsty Lang, 57 (pictured outside her west London home, right) thought the late-night noises she heard coming from outside of her house one night before Christmas were just drunken revellers at a local pub. But looking out of the window the Front Row host saw a teenage boy who had been stabbed lying on the floor with a paramedic bending over him. It was only then, she tells the Mail on Sunday, that she realised the horrifying extent of London's gang problem. Her son, who is studying sociology and has an interest in youth crime, explained how gangs use social media to document their attacks, filming stabbings and posting them on Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and YouTube to glorify terrifying levels of violence. 😱

The explosion at Chernobyl (right and inset) on April 26, 1986, remains the worst catastrophe in the history of nuclear power. About 30 workers and members of the emergency services died of acute radiation sickness soon afterwards. The lives of the families living in its shadow were changed for ever, too. But the disaster went far beyond Pripyat. In the three decades since the explosion, thousands of people are thought to have died of various cancers, with the estimates ranging from 4,000 upwards to - according to some projections - hundreds of thousands. After years of work in archives around the world and interviews with scores of eyewitnesses, I have pieced together what really happened on that April night and in the terrible days that followed. #history
