Asteroid' nearing Earth's orbit may be old NASA rocket. The jig may be up for an “asteroid” that’s expected to get nabbed by Earth’s gravity and become a mini-moon next month. Instead of a cosmic rock, the newly discovered object appears to be an old rocket from a failed moon-landing mission 54 years ago that’s finally making its way back home, according to NASA’s leading asteroid expert. Observations should help nail its identity. “I’m pretty jazzed about this,” Paul Chodas told the Associated Press. “It’s been a hobby of mine to find one of these and draw such a link, and I’ve been doing it for decades now.” Chodas speculates that asteroid 2020 SO, as it is formally known, is actually the Centaur upper-rocket stage that successfully propelled NASA’s Surveyor 2 lander to the moon in 1966 before it was discarded. The lander ended up crashing into the moon after one of its thrusters failed to ignite on the way there. The rocket, meanwhile, swept past the moon and into orbit around the sun as intended junk, never to be seen again — until perhaps now. A telescope in Hawaii last month discovered the mystery object heading our way while doing a search intended to protect our planet from doomsday rocks. The object was promptly added to the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center’s tally of asteroids and comets found in our solar system, which is now just 5,000 shy of the 1 million mark.

The Los Angeles Dodgers will host drive-in viewing parties for the National League Championship Series, which begins Monday against the Atlanta Braves in Arlington, Texas. The viewing will take place on 60-foot screens in Dodger Stadium parking lots 2 and 3 with audio broadcast through FM radio, with the same safety restrictions in place that are currently used for drive-in movie screenings in Los Angeles County. Admission is $75 per car and must be purchased in advance online at Dodgers.com/DriveIn. "We have the best fans in baseball, and the support of Dodger fans has meant so much to us this year," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "We wish we could be playing in front of 56,000 fans at Dodger Stadium Monday, but we're excited that the Dodgers have created a safe way for the community to come together and hopefully cheer us on to the World Series." Concessions will not be available, and fans are encouraged to bring their own food and beverages, though alcohol is strictly prohibited. No outdoor seating is permitted, and social distancing and mandatory face coverings will be enforced should fans need to access restrooms, which will be sanitized regularly. Monday's game begins at 5:08 p.m. Parking gates will open for the Dodger Stadium Drive-In one hour prior to game time.

Meanwhile, in UK. A man who stabbed a prayer leader in the neck in an unprovoked attack at a central London mosque has been convicted. Daniel Horton, 30, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of a bladed article in a public place at Southwark Crown Court on Monday, 12 October. He will be sentenced at the same court on Monday, 16 November. Police were called to a mosque on Park Road, NW8, at 15:10hrs on Thursday, 20 February to reports of a stabbing. Officers attended along with paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and found a man, aged in his 70s, suffering with stab injuries. The victim told officers that he was unaware of why he was attacked. Once in custody, Horton told a dedicated detention officer: “I don’t need a solicitor, I’m going to admit it.” When this was put to him in interview he said “I did this.”

JACKSONVILLE, Florida -- A month after the Jacksonville State Attorney's Office announced a new policy that it said would lead to the swifter release of body-worn camera footage, the prosecutors office released dozens of videos related to seven police shootings over the last year. In some cases the videos offer the first opportunity to understand what happened when officers shot someone. In others the footage shows that body-camera footage can never answer all the questions that come in the aftermath of a police #shooting. The video shows Lawson come to a crashed vehicle with its doors open. Lawson jumps out of his patrol car, shouts at the motorists, and in less than a second opens fire. (Read the full story.)
