Minnesota National Guard activated after George Floyd ex-cop released, demonstrators gather in Minneapolis
The Minnesota National Guard has been activated "out of an abundance" of caution, officials said Wednesday, following the release of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin from a correctional facility.
The man who sold the AR-15 rifle used to shoot 32 people in the West Texas towns of Midland and Odessa last year has pleaded guilty to a gun crime, U.S. Attorney Erin Nealy Cox announced Wednesday in a Justice Department news release, USA Today reported. Marcus Anthony Braziel, 45, of Lubbock, pleaded guilty to one count of dealing firearms without a license and one count of subscribing to a false tax return before U.S. District Judge James Wesley Hendrix on Wednesday. “If you’re a firearms dealer — whether you’re selling out of a brick-and-mortar store, in your basement, or online — you must ensure that a background check is conducted on your purchasers,” said Cox. Braziel entered a guilty plea roughly a month after surviving family members of the mass shooting filed a separate lawsuit seeking more than $1 million in damages against both Braziel and an arms manufacturer.

Federal officials arrest six for plot to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer. Federal authorities have arrested six men who they said were conspiring to kidnap Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. In a complaint filed in federal court, authorities announced the charges against six men, Adam Fox, Barry Croft, Ty Garbin, Kaleb Franks, Daniel Harris, and Brandon Caserta, all are accused of conspiring to kidnap Whitmer. All men with the exception of Croft are residents of Michigan. Croft lives in Delaware. Federal authorities and Michigan Attorney General held a press conference at 1 p.m. on Thursday to discuss the operation and arrests of seven other men connected to a Michigan militia group, Wolverine Watchmen. According to the complaint, Croft, Fox, and about 13 other men gathered in Dublin, Ohio, on June 6 to form a society that followed the U.S. Bill of Rights in an effort to be self-sufficient. The group discussed ways to achieve this through violent means, the complaint says, and discussed plans. "Several members talked about murdering 'tyrants' or 'taking' a sitting governor," the FBI wrote. "The group decided they needed to increase their numbers and encouraged each other to talk to their neighbors and spread their message. " The FBI said Fox then reached out to a Michigan-based militia group and was focusing on Governor Whitmer.

Police in Las Vegas arrested a father after they say he refused to let anyone break the window of his new car to save his dying baby, who was locked inside the hot vehicle. According to a police report obtained by the Las Vegas Review-Journal, 27-year-old Sidney Deal had locked his keys in the car Monday afternoon, while his 1-year-old daughter Sayah was inside. Deal flagged down officers for help, but when an officer offered to break the window and call for a locksmith, Deal declined and asked to call his brother instead. According to the arrest report, Deal told his brother he had just purchased the car and didn't have money to fix a broken window. Police said he also declined to have a tow truck come to the scene, because he didn't agree with the cost. After several minutes, the officers smashed the window anyway and pulled out the unresponsive toddler. Police said the little girl died before paramedics arrived on the scene.
