Investigators announced Thursday that the Southern California man found dead hanging from a tree last month took his own life. Robert Fuller, 24, was found June 10 in a park near City Hall in Palmdale, a suburb north of Los Angeles. Officials initially deemed his death a suicide, raising skepticism and outrage from community activists and Fuller's family, who said he never would have taken his own life. The early determination triggered protests and calls for an investigation. "It's real easy to make wild accusations if you're a politician or you're an activist, but we're bound by the truth and by facts," Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said during a news conference. His manner of death was deferred after an autopsy, the Los Angeles County medical-examiner coroner said in a statement Thursday. Fuller was the second Black man to be found hanging in the region. On May 31, Malcolm Harsch was found dead in a dirt field in Victorville, a desert city 45 miles east from Palmdale.

Police in Fond du Lac, Wis., say a 27-year-old man intentionally slammed his pickup head-on into a motorcyclist because he was “targeting a White person,” leaving the rider dead last week, investigators said Thursday. Daniel Navarro allegedly swerved his father’s 2004 Dodge Dakota pickup into the victim’s path without braking on July 3, Fond du Lac Sheriff Ryan Waldschmidt said at a news conference Thursday. Authorities identified the deceased as 55-year-old Phillip Thiessen, a Marine veteran and former Virginia police officer who had retired from a career with the Wisconsin Department of Justice, where he’d investigated crimes against children. After his retirement in 2018, he volunteered at the local food pantry. Investigators said they filed homicide and hate crime charges, adding that although the attack was targeted based on race, Navarro did not know Thiessen was a retired member of the law enforcement community. The court set his bond at $1 million. He’s due to return on July 17.

The Tucson Police Department released body camera video of five in-custody deaths that happened over the past decade. As Tucson Police Chief Magnus mentioned in a news conference on June 24, there have been five in-custody deaths over the past decade in which some type of restraint was used by police officers. Two of those deaths happened in the last five months.

VALLEJO — Police on Wednesday released footage of the June police killing of Sean Monterrosa, showing an officer firing rifle shots through the windshield of an unmarked police pickup truck from the back seat, but the videos do not show the 22-year-old San Francisco man as he was mortally wounded in the back of his head.
