Motorists heading along a highway in Idaho on Friday got an unexpected surprise when a rockslide sent boulders tumbling down, blocking the route. The Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) said in a news release the incident happened around 9 a.m. on U.S. Route 95 at milepost 188, between the towns of Pollock and Riggins. The rockslide left a debris field approximately 120 feet long and 40 feet deep at the base. Some rocks measured 25 feet across and were reported to be "just as tall." According to the Idaho County Sheriff’s Office, the route closed indefinitely on Friday, making north-south travel inaccessible to Fourth of July travelers. ITD officials initially said they hoped to open a temporary roadway by Sunday, but discovered a crack in the rock face up above.
A Kentucky man has been accused of firing two shots at his juvenile son after losing to the boy in arm wrestling and then holding deputies at bay for eight hours before surrendering. Curtis Zimmerman, 55, of Florence, was arrested on an endangerment charge after being taken into custody by members of the Boone County SWAT team, according to the Boone County Sheriff's Office. The boy, whose age wasn't released, wasn't injured. Deputies were called to Zimmerman’s home around 1 a.m. for a report of a subject with a weapon. When they got there, they found Zimmerman holed up in the house alone. The Sheriff’s Office Hostage Negotiation Team convinced Zimmerman to surrender. The Facebook post quoted Zimmerman as telling deputies that he was aiming at the ceiling when he fired the gun. Zimmerman was taken to a hospital for an evaluation after his arrest and his bond was set at $5,000.

Disturbing videos have emerged purportedly showing protesters clinging on to the hood of a car as it raced down a street during a demonstration Monday night in Indiana. The crowd had gathered in Bloomington to call for arrests in connection to the alleged attempted lynching of one of the city’s Black residents on Fourth of July at nearby Lake Monroe. The incident reportedly happened in an intersection around 9 p.m. local time after the protest concluded. Footage taken by local media later showed the woman being loaded onto a stretcher by first responders who arrived on scene. As of Tuesday, the driver and a passenger seen in one of the videos getting out of the car and throwing a scooter that had been obstructing its path have not been identified.
