A highway trooper in Oklahoma had a near miss last week while helping a driver when a bolt of lightning struck nearby. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said on Facebook the incident happened on Thursday along the Turner Turnpike/Interstate 44 between Bristow and Stroud, located southwest of Tulsa. According to a short statement, the trooper had pulled over to “assist with some equipment that had fallen off a trailer,” when the bolt hit the highway. Dashcam video shows the moment the bolt of lightning strikes near the roadway as the officer walks nearby. It did not appear the officer suffered any injuries. Last year there were just 21 lightning-related fatalities, down from an average of 55 deaths per year in 2001.

A Black Lives Matter protester has died in hospital, less than 24 hours after they were struck by a car which plowed into a crowd of demonstrators in Seattle. Summer Taylor, 24, succumbed to injuries sustained during the collision, which occurred on a closed-off section of Interstate 5 shortly after 1am on Saturday. The protester was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in a critical injury, before passeing away on Saturday evening. The driver of the Jaguar, Dawit Kelete, 27, sped off from the scene, but was later apprehended. Officials are trying to determine the motive as well as how Kelete got onto the interstate, which had been closed by the state patrol for more than an hour before the protesters were hit.

Atlanta protesters vandalized the Georgia State Patrol headquarters early Sunday, spraying graffiti and sparking a fire inside the building with fireworks. As many as 100 people, many dressed in black and wearing masks, marched outside the building at around 1 a.m., the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) said in an emailed statement. Video footage from the scene shows a group of several dozen people outside the building and the sound of drums beating in the background. A loud bang is followed by a red flash from inside the building, where smoke can be seen through a glass window. A few people clad in black can be seen walking up to the window carrying what appears to be fireworks, the video shows. The GSP said fireworks thrown through a window of the building caused a small fire in an office. Department of Public Safety (DPS) employees put out the fire, and two workers were treated for smoke inhalation.

An off-duty police officer has been filmed opening fire on a Walmart customer suspected of shoplifting. Shocking footage taken Saturday in Oklahoma shows as the alleged thief tries to flee in his car before being shot at '10 or 11 times'. Del City police confirmed they are investigating after a clip of the incident was posted online. Neither the shooting victim, who is understood to have been taken to a local hospital in a stable condition, or the off duty officer involved have been named. The man shot at was described by onlookers as a black male. He attempted to leave the store with more than he had paid for.Del City Police Commander Bradley Rule said: 'The suspect was hit. He received non-life threatening injuries. He arrived at a hospital and we have detectives there now speaking to him.'
