MISSOURI — A Kansas City police officer was rushed to the hospital after being shot in the head while on-duty Thursday. This is the second officer shot in the city. A department spokesperson said officers were called to a “disturbance” near 31st and Van Brunt and upon officers arriving, the suspect fled and officers pursed on foot. The suspect began shooting at officers and they returned fire. The suspect was fatally shot. One officer was struck in the head and was undergoing emergency surgery at an area hospital. Earlier Thursday, a Kansas City officer and a bus driver were shot in a separate incident.

Portland police declared a riot early Friday during unrest near the federal courthouse in the city and demanded protesters leave the area or face crowd-control munitions. Police described a chaotic scene. They said several protesters were “starting fires, throwing rocks at officers, pointing lasers at officers, and launching projectiles with slingshots at officers.” Andy Ngo, the journalist, posted a video of the unrest near the federal courthouse that he said showed U.S. military protecting the building that was under attack. On Wednesday night, anarchists in the city set a 120-year-old elk statue on fire that had been the target before. Portland Police Bureau Chief Chuck Lovell said in a statement, “Engaging in criminal activity including vandalism and property damage is not peaceful demonstration. We ask for the public’s help in identifying and sharing information about those responsible so they can be held accountable.”

Five occupants of an SUV were killed and two others were hospitalized in South Carolina on Thursday after the vehicle crossed a median and crashed into two tractor trailers. The crash happened on Interstate 26 in Orangeburg County, not far from the exit leading to the town of Orangeburg. Neither truck driver was seriously hurt, the station reported. The victims were not immediately identified. “We are still doing identifications and still have to notify next of kin,” Orangeburg County Coroner Samuetta Marshall told the Times and Democrat of Orangeburg. Traffic was backed up for hours after the 12:30 p.m. crash as westbound lanes of the interstate were closed and slowdowns occurred in the eastbound lanes.

Today, they learned of another coordinated attack on them that is planned for this weekend."

Santa Ana police investigating a child molestation case shot and killed the suspect during a struggle for a handgun at an apartment complex in Fountain Valley. Officers had gone to the apartment in the 10300 block of Hacienda Avenue about 10:50 p.m. Monday to contact a man being sought in connection with a molestation case, according to Santa Ana Police Department Cpl. Anthony Bertagna. His mother opened the door and let police inside. At that point, the man tried to flee. Officers chased the suspect and noticed he was carrying a gun, according to the corporal. There was apparently a struggle for the weapon at some point, and that was when police opened fire, striking the man at least once. After officers rendered aid on him at the scene, the man was transported to UCI Medical Center in Orange. He was later pronounced dead. #shooting
