LAKE COUNTY, Florida -- A 52-year-old Lake County Sheriff’s Office detention deputy died while under quarantine after testing positive recently for the coronavirus. Sheriff Peyton Grinnell announced the death “with great sadness” on the agency’s Facebook page Wednesday evening. “Jones was highly respected at the Sheriff’s Office by all who knew him as he has been described as a hard-working employee with great interpersonal skills who led by example,” the agency said in a release. “The Sheriff’s Office is grateful for his service and is praying for peace and comfort for Jones’ wife, Felisia, their three daughters, Shaylynn, Kandace, and Jada, and all who knew and loved him.” #RIP
CALIFORNIA — Three people, all believed to be adult males, were fatally injured when they were washed off rocks into the ocean in Ventura County Thursday. Fire officials say around 4:40 pm local time, the victims were washed into the ocean by a wave on Pacific Coast Highway near Deer Creek Road. All three victims were recovered and the search operations have been completed. The investigation is ongoing.
SECAUCUS, New Jersey -- Secaucus police officers caught a child dropped from a second-floor window and town firefighters rescued other residents from an apartment building that caught fire Wednesday night. A 56-year-old woman, who was found unresponsive on the floor in the first-floor apartment where the fire started, is in critical condition at St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston with second and third degree burns, Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller said. Detective Matthew Ford and Police Officers Stephen Hurtuk and Matthew Garzone arrived at the fire scene and were alerted that a second-floor resident could evacuate because her apartment was full of smoke. The resident dropped her 4-year-old son out the window to police officers, who caught the boy and took him to safety.

COBB COUNTY, Georgia -- A search for an armed carjacker in Cobb County ended in an exchange of gunfire Thursday evening, injuring an officer and leaving the suspect dead. Martin Humberto Sanchez Fregoso, 37, of Smyrna, was fatally shot after authorities said he fired a rifle and struck a Cobb officer in the head. He had been pursued from the area of Powers Ferry Road and Riverbend Club Drive after stepping out of a stolen Tesla and firing multiple rounds toward officers, according to the GBI.

The “blue flu” struck 171 Atlanta cops in the days after criminal charges were brought against two white officers in the fatal shooting of a black man, Rayshard Brooks. “The city’s response, I recall early on, seems like they downplayed those numbers. The public should know that’s a significant amount of police officers who did not come to work during that time period,” retired Atlanta police Detective Vince Velasquez told the station. TAMPA Fla. – Two suspects of rampant vehicle thefts and burglaries between Hillsborough County and Pinellas County have been caught on videotape but the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office needs the public’s help to identify the individuals. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister publicly said, “Knowing that guns have been stolen from some of these vehicles, identifying and locating these suspects is even more urgent. We do not want to see these weapons contributing to crime in our communities. Three Aurora, Colo., police officers linked to the August 2019 death of 23-year-old black man Elijah McClain have been reassigned to “non-enforcement” roles as the case faces a new investigation, according to reports. Officers Nathan Woodyard, Jason Rosenblatt and Randy Roedema now have duties that don’t involve direct contact with the public, such as administrative duties or paperwork, FOX 31 of Denver reported. Woodyard and Rosenblatt were reassigned June 13, while Roedema received a new role June 20, the station reported. Concern for the officers’ safety was a consideration in the moves, an Aurora Police Department spokesman told the station. Various police officers and city officials have faced death threats in recent weeks in connection with the McClain case, the police spokesman said.
A fiery head-on crash in eastern Colorado on Friday afternoon left at least seven people dead. The crash occurred along Highway 40/287 near Wild Horse, between Hugo and Kit Carson. A white Ford F-150 truck towing a boat was traveling west and trying to pass a semi-truck when it collided with a green Chevrolet Silverado traveling east, the Colorado State Patrol told the station. The Ford soon burst into flames and four occupants died, while at least two occupants of the Chevrolet died at the scene. A third occupant of the Chevy died on the way to a hospital and a fourth was being treated for life-threatening injuries. The highway was closed in both directions as emergency responders worked at the scene. The road was expected to remain closed until at least 11 p.m. local time. Colorado Department of Transportation officials suggested an alternate route of Highway 59 through Siebert, a town along Interstate 70.
