The Justice Department announced federal arson charges Wednesday against a 33-year-old Philadelphia woman accused of torching a pair of police vehicles during protests in the City of Brotherly Love. Lore-Elisabeth Blumenthal allegedly appears on video taking a burning piece of wood from a police sedan and shoving it into a police SUV as both were parked near City Hall, according to U.S. Attorney William McSwain, of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. Many of the nationwide protests against police brutality and systemic racism in recent weeks have been organized on social media. But those same platforms also provide opportunities for law enforcement to keep demonstrators under surveillance. Oregon police fired 21 gunshots at an African-American man who struck a white officer with his vehicle in an apartment complex parking lot late Saturday night, authorities said. At least two of those bullets hit the man, identified as Victor Dale, Jr. He was reported in serious condition in Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center’s intensive care unit, Oregon Police Chief Mike Navarre. The #shooting occurred about 9:50 p.m. in the parking lot of the Kingston Court Apartments, and stemmed from a 911 call that turned out to be a prank. A woman called police in a “frantic” condition, reporting that a man wearing a zombie mask was trying to break into her apartment, he said. Mr. Dale had locked himself in a silver Buick Rendezvous sport utility vehicle after an altercation with a woman at the location. As they approached, Mr. Dale accelerated and struck Officer Turner, who was in front of the SUV. Over the following five seconds, the two officers fired 21 gunshots before the vehicle came to a stop.

You can take some people at face value. A Florida man with an apparent tattoo of a machete on his face was arrested for allegedly attacking someone with a machete over the weekend, authorities said. Justin Couch, 25, is accused of slicing the victim’s forearm with the blade, leaving him unable to move his left hand, according to the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office. The victim, an adult man, said the incident started Monday at around 2:30 p.m. when Couch began arguing with him “for no reason” and kicked him out of a home in Tarrytown, deputies said. When the victim asked if he could grab his wallet and cellphone before leaving, Couch allegedly told him “There’s nothing here for you, leave.” He then “began striking the victim in the arm and leg” with the flat side of a machete’s blade, officials said. Couch then apparently took the the victim to an unknown friend’s house, who took the man to the hospital. He was arrested and charged with aggravated battery.

Two teenagers caught on video spray-painting the side of St. Patrick’s Cathedral during recent unrest sparked by the death of George Floyd were arrested. Anaya Diaz, 18, of suburban Westchester County, and a 17-year-old girl whose name was withheld by New York City police, were charged with criminal mischief and making graffiti. Police said the pair spray-painted the words, “F--k”, “BLM”, “NYPDK” and “No justice no peace” on the walls of the iconic cathedral in late May. “Reward up to $2500. Seen them?" NYPD Crime Stoppers tweeted before the suspects were arrested this week. The archbishop of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, decried the graffiti – and the issue of defacing places of worship. “It has a special violence to it when it is the house of worship that represents the noblest, uplifting sentiments in the human project, so that's a particular kick in the stomach,” Dolan said.

An 18-year-old security guard at an autobody shop was shot dead by Los Angeles County Sheriff Department deputies Thursday night, according to local reports. The teen, who was identified as Andres Guardado, was working at the Freeway auto body shop as a private security guard. Deputies were patrolling the area and said they saw a man flash a gun before running away. Police chased him before Guardado was shot in the upper torso. He died on the scene. A handgun was also uncovered. Family members and friends attempted to confront deputies at the scene. The shooting is the second involving #LASD deputies in two days. Terron Jammal Boone, the half-brother of Robert Fuller –­ a black man found hanging in a California park last week –­ was shot to death during a traffic stop after the suspect allegedly opened fire on police.

Atlanta's interim police chief acknowledged Friday that some of his department's rank and file "may feel abandoned" as officers are continuing to call out sick, FOX NEWS reported. The call outs began Wednesday after a district attorney announced charges against two Atlanta officers in the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks. Interim Chief Rodney Bryant told The Associated Press in an interview that the sick calls continued Thursday, but said the department had sufficient staff to protect the city. It’s not clear how many officers called out. “Some are angry. Some are fearful. Some are confused on what we do in this space. Some may feel abandoned," Bryant said of the officers. "But we are there to assure them that we will continue to move forward and get through this.”

The Pasco County Sheriff's Office has released body camera footage of a deputy being attacked while talking with a man this week. The incident occurred Wednesday when deputies responded to an Auto Zone in reference to calls about a man who was reportedly entering and exiting the store frequently. At first, the man was very cooperative with the deputy, but he then again attempted to enter Auto Zone. Another deputy reiterated the first deputy's conversation with the the man, stating that while he was not under arrest and free to leave, he could not go back into Auto Zone. Officials said that during the conversation, the man suddenly became violent, aggressively attacking and knocking the deputy to the ground and continuing to attack the deputy by punching them multiple times before the Auto Zone manager and additional deputies were able to stop and subdue the suspect.

The Atlanta Police Foundation said all of the city’s officers will receive a $500 bonus. The bonuses are a way to thank the officers for the long hours worked during recent months, including at various protests and rallies around the city. The Atlanta Police Foundation, supported through donations, is funding the bonuses. The foundation’s announcement comes the day after the Atlanta Police Department said that a “higher than usual” number of officers didn’t go to work Wednesday night. The move happened hours after the Fulton County District Attorney announced criminal charges for two accused in the death of Rayshard Brooks. The foundational also has supported the At-Promise Youth Center, a 17,000-square-foot facility on Cameron Alexander Boulevard, and a wellness program for officers.
