London, UK. The Met police issued a Section 60 order, giving police greater power to stop and search citizens. The decision to extend powers was granted after the Met received reports of individuals coming to the city with weapons. Police moved to clear the area around Waterloo station as word of "pyrotechnics and knives" raised concerns of further violence into the night. The protests were meant to wind down by 5 p.m. BST, but it does not appear that all protesters or activists have complied. A tactical support group officer just advised to clear the area due to 'pyrotechnics and knives' in the area. They've brought out police dogs as well.

The Hong Kong Police Force has said that they have reminded a riot police officer to remain professional after he was filmed chanting “black lives matter” and “I can’t breathe” during an operation in Yau Ma Tei on Friday evening. Police were dispersing crowds who had gathered to mark a year since tear gas was released around the legislature during an anti-extradition law demonstration. The officer was filmed making the apparently sarcastic chant and saying “here is not America” whilst his colleagues cordoned off the area. A police spokesperson told HKFP that there are guidelines to govern the behaviour of officers: “Management of the Force is concerned and is of the view that the language used by the frontline police officer was not relevant to his duties at [the] scene. The officer has been rebuked and reminded to always present himself professionally and enhance his sensitivity.” #HK

The M1 Garand 🇺🇸 in Haiti 🇭🇹

The nation of Haiti as we know it formed its first army after a 30 year occupation by the USA. During that time the Haitian Gendarmerie was trained and equipped by US Marines and their M1903 rifles. The Gendarmerie became a real national army, the Garde d'Haiti, in 1934. In December 1941 Haiti declared war on Japan following Pearl Harbor. Haiti wasn't prepared to fight but it did become eligible for American Lend-Lease, and the modern US weapons were the first refit since independence.

Immediately after WWII Haiti went on a buying spree of surplus US gear because of a militant dictator who needed a well-armed force to maintain rule. The overthrows of government are too numerous to write, but the situation was so bad that in 1961 the US placed arms sanctions on Haiti, locking them in on their WWII era weaponry. From their perspective, there was not a pressing need to replace it even using covert means. Thus the M1 persevered as the standard arm.
