Atlanta police chief resigns in wake of deadly officer-involved shooting.

Five members of the violent MS-13 street gang have been accused of gunning down a Maryland man who was ambushed as he left his home to go to work. Their arrests in the May 26 shooting death of Francisco Anton Medrano-Campos, 29. Police said two gunmen were lying in wait for Medrano-Campos that morning when he emerged from his Wheaton apartment just outside Washington. Montgomery Couty police said Medrano-Campos had no connections to MS-13 or any other gang, which was the first to report key details on the arrests and the link to the gang. Police say the gang targeted Medrano-Campos after he beat Orellana with a lead pipe for stealing cash, a PlayStation and an Xbox from him after moving out. Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin is eligible to receive pension benefits during his retirement years even if he's convicted of killing George Floyd, according to the Minnesota agency that represents retired public workers. Chauvin is charged with second-degree murder, third-degree murder and manslaughter in the May 25 death of George. Video of the arrest shows Chauvin, who is white, using his knee to pin down the neck of George, who was black and handcuffed, for several minutes as Floyd pleaded for air and eventually stopped moving. George's death has sparked protests around the world. The Minnesota Public Employees Retirement Association said in a statement that former employees who meet length-of-service requirements qualify for benefits regardless of whether they quit or are fired. Those payments are not affected by criminal charges or convictions, the agency said, citing state law.

Less than 24 hours after the fatal #shooting, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation released this surveillance video from the Wendy's. Rayshard Brooks, a 27-year-old black man, was gunned down by Atlanta police after a scuffle with officers in the parking lot of a Wendy's.

An attorney says that a 21-year-old Mississippi woman who was arrested after making posts on social media that called her father and stepmother racist has been released from jail after the charges were dropped. Kaileigh Schmidt of Petal was charged Wednesday with two misdemeanor counts of obscene telecommunication. Carlos Moore told media outlets, including The Associated Press, that the charges were dismissed by the Jones County Sheriff’s Office the next day." She spent a night in jail for simply exercising her First Amendment right on Facebook," Moore told the Jackson Clarion-Ledger. Online records confirm Schmidt was released from jail on Thursday. She was accused of sharing her father and stepmother’s personal information, phone numbers and addresses in the Facebook posts. The postings resulted in them receiving death threats, sheriff's investigator Ruben Bishop said.
