A giant freight train derailed in California leaving it zig-zagged across the track, temporarily shutting roads and diverting other trains on a busy mainline. Six Union Pacific train cars derailed next to Powell and Horton streets near the Emeryville Amtrak station in Alameda County. Several streets in the area were closed but have since been reopened. The incident happened at around 2pm on Sunday and involved three refrigerated box cars. No injuries were reported and a Union Pacific spokesperson said they are investigating the cause of the derailment, along with the Federal Railroad Administration. They added that the six cars should be removed from the area. 'The scene is not causing any hazards and no evacuations have been recommended as the tanker cars are empty,' a police statement said.
New projections from an influential research model show that some states should be able to safely begin easing coronavirus social distancing restrictions as early as May 4. The University of Washington's Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation has released a new map projection that reveals when each US state could potentially start relaxing measures. The new state-by-state analyses indicates the states that could lift some social distancing measures but only if 'robust containment strategies' are put in place to stop a second wave of infections. States with low death rates, including Vermont, West Virginia, Montana and Hawaii, could safely relax some restrictions on May 4 so long as they continued to limit social gatherings, according to the model. Other largely rural or sparsely populated states, including Iowa, North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Utah, Arkansas and Oklahoma, may need to wait until late June or early July, the institute said.
