A 69-year-old North Carolina woman played dead after being shot, enabling her to survive a shooting in which three others were killed, according to a report. “Somebody came in my house and shot everybody here including me,” Hazel Epps told the 911 dispatcher, according to WNCN-TV. “But I believe everybody is dead except me.” Epps, who was shot in the torso, also told the dispatcher the shooter was still in the house, according to the station. "Yes, I know who did it,” she said. She could also be heard praying and asking for help, the station reported. The shooting happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday in Clarkton. Deputies with the Bladen County Sheriff’s Office identified the shooting suspect as Taurean Johnson, 36. He turned himself in to deputies Sunday night and was charged with three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.
A 20-year-old California man is alive after police say he drove his car over the side of a parking garage from the top level this weekend. Santa Monica Police responded to a call at about 12:10 a.m Sunday about a vehicle that fell off the side of a multi-level parking garage, police said in a press release. According to the Santa Monica Daily Press, the vehicle drove off the structure's sixth floor. Once on the scene, they discovered an adult male conscious but in critical condition inside the vehicle. Officials said he was able to speak with first responders. The driver was transported to the hospital immediately, hindering officers’ attempts at determining if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. Santa Monica Police later obtained a warrant for the driver’s blood. The driver remains in the hospital where he is said to be in stable condition. Police said the investigation is ongoing.

Colorado House lawmakers on Tuesday voted to repeal the state's death penalty after a lengthy 11-hour debate, clearing one of the last hurdles before the controversial bill becomes law, FOX NEWS reported. The vote from bleary-eyed lawmakers finally came around 4 a.m. after Republicans repeatedly tried to slow the process by making lengthy speeches or bringing unsuccessful amendments up for a vote. Republican Rep. Steve Humphrey spent nearly 40 minutes reading from the Bible. At one point, Republicans forced two hours of debate on whether voters, not lawmakers, should be able to decide whether capital punishment should be legalized in the state. No Republicans supported the repeal. Democrats have a 17-vote advantage in the House. The bill, which cleared the Senate last month, needs one final vote from the House, which could happen as early as Wednesday. Democratic Gov. Jared Polis has indicated he will sign it into law.

A Sumter County Sheriff’s deputy was killed in the line of duty Tuesday morning. “It is with profound sadness that our brother, Cpl. Andrew Gillette, died from wounds suffered in a shooting,” Sheriff Anthony Dennis said. The gunfight broke out at a home at 3120 on the Thomas Sumter Highway while deputies were attempting to serve an eviction notice. The sheriff said the suspect, without provocation, fired several shots at the deputies, striking Gillette in the chest. The fallen officer was wearing a vest at the time. Other deputies returned fire and killed the suspect–who remains unidentified until his next of kin are made aware of his death. Deputy Gillette leaves behind a wife and an 11-year-old son. “We ask for you to keep them in your prayers,” Dennis said. “Our deepest condolences and prayers are with his family,” Dennis said. “Gillette was one who loved what he did. He loved life.” #RIP
