Thousands celebrated a new year by waiting in long lines to be among the first to legally buy marijuana for recreational use in Illinois on the day the state lifted its long-standing prohibition, the Chicago Tribune reports. Anyone 21 and over can now buy and possess recreational marijuana in Illinois. Some residents wasted little time lining up. “I couldn’t believe that many people came out so early,” said Cal Marek, who captured video outside a dispensary in suburban Chicago. The mood was festive Wednesday as customers queued up — some overnight — to buy cannabis flower, gummies, chocolates and other products from the Chicago-area dispensaries among 37 state-sanctioned stores in Illinois that were ready to open.

The carjacking took place in the area of Chino on Saturday around 3:11 p.m., according to the Riverside California Highway Patrol. The suspected carjacking vehicle was spotted on the 91 Freeway and the suspected carjackers were possibly armed, the Riverside CHP said. Newschopper4 Bravo arrived over the chase shortly after 3:30 p.m., when authorities had gone into tracking mode. The silver vehicle was going through intersections at high speed and ignoring street lights in the Brea area. At one point, the suspected carjacking vehicle crashed into another car at an intersections and suffered notable damage, but the suspected carjackers continued forward. A short time later, the silver vehicle crashed into a wall, and two people ran out of the car and into some shrubs nearby. After running out of breath, the two suspected carjackers gave each other a hug and surrendered to what appeared to be passing good Samaritans near the site of the crash. #pursuit
Multiple people were killed in a major crash involving a tour bus, semi-trucks, and several other vehicles on the Pennsylvania Turnpike early Sunday in the western part of the state that left dozens injured, according to officials. The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. Sunday in the highway's westbound lanes in Mount Pleasant Township, located about 40 miles southeast of downtown Pittsburgh. Pennsylvania Turnpike spokesman Carl DeFebo confirmed fatalities on Twitter, saying a "prolonged closure" of the turnpike is likely. DeFebo added the Westmoreland County coroner confirmed five fatalities and said at least 60 people were hospitalized with injuries. Images from the scene showed mangled wreckage on the highway. A tour bus could be seen flipped on its side as a result of the crash.

(WARNING 21+) Davis police released video of a domestic disturbance and officer-involved shooting, which led to the deaths of a woman and her son. On Dec. 19, officers responded to a home on Avocet Avenue regarding a man threatening his mother. In body camera videos provided by the Davis Police Department, officers look through windows of the home where they saw 62-year-old Carol Gray on the floor under a sheet. Her son, 29-year-old Christopher Gray, is holding a knife. When officers got to the home, Carol was still breathing. “Christopher I need you to put the knife down!” an officer yells before Christopher walks toward them and a stun gun is used. Christopher falls and runs back into the kitchen. As officers call him back to them, one officer can be heard saying, "He's back inside the kitchen. He's getting more knives." He then throws a knife toward the officers. Five Davis police officers were involved in the incident and three of them fired at Christopher.🔫👮🏻‍♂️ #shooting

Minnesota Vikings wide receiver Stefon Diggs appeared to be frustrated with the lack of targets he’s been getting during a playoff game against the New Orleans Saints on Sunday. Diggs tossed his helmet in frustration toward the Vikings sideline after one of their drives stalled. Minnesota was leading 13-10 at that point in the game and Diggs had not been targeted at all up to that point. Diggs got his first target and catch with 4:47 remaining in the third. It was a 9-yard throw from Kirk Cousins to Diggs. The drive led to a touchdown and put Minnesota up 20-10 at the end of the third. 🏈

Hundreds of thousands of mourners, many chanting, beating their chests and wailing in grief, turned out across Iran on Sunday to mourn slain military commander Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in Iraq in a U.S. military strike, reported Reuters. State television showed huge crowds of mourners turning out to pay their respects, their chants, chest-beating and wails in keeping with the style of mourning common among Shi’ite Muslims.
An explosive leak of tens of thousands of documents from the defunct data firm Cambridge Analytica is set to expose the inner workings of the company that collapsed after the Observer revealed it had misappropriated 87 million Facebook profiles, the Guardian reports. More than 100,000 documents relating to work in 68 countries that will lay bare the global infrastructure of an operation used to manipulate voters on “an industrial scale” are set to be released over the next months. The unpublished documents contain material that suggests the firm was working for a political party in Ukraine in 2017 even while under investigation as part of Mueller’s inquiry and emails that Kaiser says describe how the firm helped develop a “sophisticated infrastructure of shell companies that were designed to funnel dark money into politics”.
A man, 37, was shot dead by police officers in Germany on Sunday evening after he ‘ran towards them with a knife while shouting Allahu akbar’, reported the Express Digest. Believed to be a Turkish citizen, the man was shot at around 7.40pm in front of the South Police Station in Gelsenkirchen in the west of the country. A police spokesman said: ‘Two police officers were in front of the station in a patrol car. ‘A man ran past the patrol car and suddenly hit the car with an object. The officials asked him to stop. The man attacked the officers with his arm raised and the object.’ In the other hand, according to police, he had a knife that he tried to hide behind his back. He ignored orders from the police, continuing to threaten officers and using the phrase ‘Allahu akbar’.
