A flying highway sign gave a driver an unwelcome New Year's Eve gift when it impaled the rear window of his Corvette during a highway mishap that left multiple vehicles damaged in south Florida. The large highway merge sign speared the rear window of the car Tuesday afternoon on the northbound lanes of I-95, about 20 miles from Miami. A man named Malcolm, who owns the car, says it happened during his ride home from the gym. Investigators think a car hit the sign and it flew into the air and was launched into the Corvetteโ€™s windshield. "I didn't even see it. It just happened really fast," Malcolm said. The yellow sign was standing straight out from the shattered window. Up to five vehicles were involved in crashes while apparently trying to avoid the sign before it crashed through the Corvette.
Accident in the city of St. Petersburg, Russia. The truck driver was hospitalized.
Several drivers in Washington state had to be rescued by snowplows after getting trapped in their vehicles on a highway New Year's Eve, according to officials. But the rescues had nothing to do with wintry weather. Tumbleweeds had piled up about 30 feet, blocking State Route 240 and leaving "several vehicles trapped," including a semi-truck, according to Washington State Patrol, FOX News reports. The road was closed in both directions around 6:30 p.m. near West Richland, Wash. Trooper Chris Thorson shared a photo of Department of Transportation workers making their way through the piles of tumbleweeds in the dark as some drivers can still be seen in their vehicles. Thorson said that the tumbleweeds were piled between 20 and 30 feet high in some places. A video from Thorson with the hashtag #tumblegeddon showed workers from the DOT digging the vehicle out.
The Australian navy on Friday began the evacuations of some of the thousands of people stranded on the east coast of the fire-ravaged country as a searing weather front was set to whip up more blazes across the states of Victoria and New South Wales, reported Reuters. At the peak of the summer holiday period, tens of thousands of holidaymakers were urged to leave national parks and tourist areas on the NSW south coast and eastern areas of Victoria before a return of temperatures above 104 F and strong winds on Saturday. Victoria declared a state of disaster for the first time, giving authorities broad powers to compel people to leave their properties and take control of services, similar to the state of emergency that has been declared in NSW. So far this week the fires have killed seven people in NSW and two in Victoria, where 28 other people are unaccounted for. The navy started the evacuations of nearly 1,000 of the 4,000 people stranded on a beach in the isolated town of Mallaยญcoota in far-east Victoria.๐Ÿ”ฅ

WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT! 61-year-old man kicked, beaten by robbers on Christmas Eve, Houston, Texas. The attack was captured on surveillance video around 8 p.m. The victim was walking into his apartment complex when three men attacked. He was kicked and punched repeatedly. The victim said the men were demanding a phone, so he gave them his own phone. Detectives say, what the victim didn't know at the time, was that the suspects had lost one of their phones and they tracked it. It led them to a southwest Houston apartment complex and the victim just happened to be walking by at the wrong time. After he was attacked, other neighbors got word of what had happened. They feared they would also be attacked and threw rocks at the suspects. One was hit in the eye. All three were arrested and charged with robbery, including 23-year-old Faisal Abuamarah, 19-year-old Abdulazzez Abdulkhaliq, and 20-year-old Samuel Ibeson. All three had previous criminal records.
The entire nation should pause and reflect on the fact that a police officer was shot once every 30 hours in this country. The 293 officers shot represents over a 20% increase over last year. The continuing and escalating violence against law enforcement is an assault on our civilized society and must end. ๐Ÿ—ฟ #RIP
