A Wisconsin mother has pleaded guilty after police said she repeatedly failed to protect her children from abuse and turned up the music to drown out their cries rather than calling for help.

Charlotte Kurek acknowledged that Devario Cruz, her boyfriend and the father of 4-year-old Dante Campbell, could be “heavy-handed” with the children, yet authorities say she never reported him to police.

According to the criminal complaint, Kurek watched Cruz abuse the children without calling law enforcement or even threatening to call in an attempt to make him stop, leading investigators to conclude that she appeared to care more about protecting Cruz than protecting her own children.

On October 18, 2025, Cruz found Dante unresponsive in bed and reportedly told Kurek, “I don’t think he is alive, I think he is dead.” Although Kurek began screaming and said they needed to go to the hospital, authorities say neither adult immediately called 911. Instead, they waited more than an hour, loaded Dante into a vehicle and drove to a friend’s home to drop off his twin sister while leaving three other children home alone. Kurek called 911 only after that detour, and Dante was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The couple initially claimed that Dante had fallen down a flight of stairs and that bicycles and other objects had landed on him, but investigators did not believe his injuries matched that explanation. Kurek later admitted that she had lied, while Dante’s twin sister was found with a swollen eye, scratches and bruises across her body. When police asked the little girl what had happened, she reportedly answered,
“Daddy hurt me.”

A mother knew her children were being hurt, heard their cries and chose to make the music louder instead of calling police. Now one child is gone, another was allegedly found showing signs of abuse, and Kurek has finally admitted her criminal failure to protect them.

NEW: A Georgia man was executed in Alabama Thursday for raping and killing a child in 2021.

Jeremy Williams pleaded guilty to raping and murdering 5-year-old Kamarie Holland.
Williams, 42, raped and strangled Holland after offering her mother $2,500 for the child to perform a sex act, prosecutors said, adding he filmed his attack.
He was put to death at 6:16 p.m. on Thursday

Please, praying for the Washington County Sheriff’s Deputy who was seriously injured in the line of duty last week.🙏🏻

A Washington County Tennessee Sheriff’s Deputy was inside his patrol vehicle working and directing traffic with his lights activated when struck from behind.

Sheriff Sexton said the deputy was directing traffic on Boones Creek Road when a vehicle reportedly struck the patrol car from behind while the deputy was in it. Sexton said the deputy’s blue lights were activated when he was struck.

WCSO Public Information Officer Susan Saylor said the deputy sustained a concussion in the crash

NEW: Big Bear bald eagle Shadow has been spotted with subadult eagle KD1, in the nest he shared with Jackie, just a few days after his partner of eight years died following weeks in intensive care at the Ojai Raptor Center.

On Thursday, the Friends of Big Bear Valley webcam captured the two eagles spending time in the nest together for the first time. Biologists say KD1, a banded eagle tracked since her birth, is almost of breeding age.

NEW: A Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office, SC deputy was taken to the hospital after a crash on Highway 101.

Investigators said the deputy was running station radar in the median when a pickup truck rear-ended the official on Thursday afternoon.
