Reno Police Arrest Man Wanted on animal Cruelty Charges:

The Reno Police Department has arrested William Ohlson on outstanding warrants, including a felony warrant related to an ongoing animal cruelty investigation led by Washoe County Animal Control.

The investigation began after allegations that the suspect adopted kittens and later recorded videos depicting the animals being killed. The suspect was also recently arrested by the San Francisco Police Department in connection with the investigation before returning to the Reno area.

After receiving information that the suspect had returned to his Reno residence, officers established a perimeter and, with assistance from the Mobile Engagement Team and the Washoe County Sheriff's Office K-9 Unit, safely took him into custody without incident.

Ohlson was arrested on a felony warrant for animal cruelty and two misdemeanor warrants.

The investigation remains active and is being led by Washoe County Animal Control. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Washoe County Animal Services.

As with all criminal cases, these charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.

A message from Vancouver Police Chief Troy Price

To the residents and business owners of Vancouver:

You have likely heard that there has been a directive from the City of Vancouver regarding how the Vancouver Police Department will handle low-level misdemeanor crimes. As the Vancouver Police Chief, I want to assure you that Vancouver Police Officers will continue to respond to and take reports for lower-level crimes, which include theft, criminal trespass, possession of controlled substance, and using a controlled substance in a public place, among others. Under the current process, Officers will refer these cases to the City Attorney’s Office for prosecution. Officers will also cite or make an arrest of individuals as permitted.

This recent directive is a result of a state Supreme Court decision which dramatically lowered the number of cases individual defense attorneys can take each year. This decision, combined with a shortage of defense attorneys, has resulted in the perfect storm where judges are dismissing cases due to lack of legal representation for defendants. What this means for community safety is many criminals face no immediate legal consequences and if their case is not re-filed, they face no legal consequences at all from the courts.

We expect that the current situation is short-lived and we will once again have adequate defense attorneys to handle the caseload or the state mandate on caseload caps will change and police officers can once again cite and arrest for all misdemeanor crimes, and victims will get the justice they deserve.

I continue to support the work of the City Attorney’s Office to find an acceptable resolution to this current situation locally. The safety and vitality of Vancouver is my number one priority.

BREAKING: A fourth firefighter has died after suffering severe burns when he and several fellow firefighters were overtaken by a fast-moving wildfire near the Colorado-Utah border last month, officials said Saturday.

Nathan Matthews, 43, died Friday, the federal Interior Department said in a release. He was from Lincoln, Nebraska. He was a dedicated member of the Rifle Helitack crew.

Matthews’ death came nearly a month after he and other firefighters were enveloped June 27 in what’s known as a burnover β€” a situation in which a fire spreads and closes off all escape routes. They were part of a Helitack crew β€” a group that gets dropped by helicopter into remote areas to try to squelch new, rapidly expanding fires β€” that had been deployed in Mesa County, Colorado, west of the city of Grand Junction.

The firefighters deployed tent-like emergency shelters to try to shield themselves from the flames, officials said, but three firefighters died at the scene: Emily Barker, 38, Nick Hutcherson, and Sydney Watson, 26.

"This is another heartbreaking loss for our wildland fire family," said U.S. Wildland Fire Service Chief Brian Fennessy.
