Smith County Texas Sheriff’s Office lost one of their own.

On Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at approximately 2:00 pm, Smith County Deputy Gerald Rhey Atchison Jr. – 53 was on duty at the Smith County Sheriff’s Office located at 227 N. Spring Avenue in Tyler.  While performing his duties as a Property and Evidence Technician, Deputy Atchison collapsed due to a medical event.  Other law enforcement personnel rushed to his aid and began life saving measures to include CPR.  Upon the arrival of Paramedics from UT Health EMS, they continued life saving measures as Deputy Atchison was unresponsive.  He was transported to Christus Mother Frances ER where life saving measures continued. He was pronounced deceased by medical personnel.

Smith County Precinct. 4 Justice of the Peace Curtis Wulf arrived at the hospital for the inquest.  At this time, it is believed that Deputy Atchison suffered a massive coronary event.

Deputy Gerald Atchison began his employment with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office in September of 2003 as a Detention Officer in the jail.  He graduated from the TJC Police Academy in 2005 where he obtained his Peace Officer License and eventual promotion to the Patrol Division.  During Deputy Atchison’s career with the Smith County Sheriff’s Office, he served as a Detention Officer, Patrol Deputy, Criminal Investigator, Telecommunications Operator, and most recently a Property and Evidence Technician.

Not every official portrait goes according to plan.

What was supposed to be a routine staff photo turned into a memorable moment when Indiana Conservation Officer Levi Knach's K9 partner, Kenobi, repeatedly interrupted the session with enthusiastic kisses, nuzzles, and enough tail-wagging affection to knock his handler's campaign hat out of place.

While the outtakes captured plenty of laughs, Kenobi's playful personality is only one side of the job. As a certified rescue dog with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the chocolate Labrador is trained to locate missing people and detect illegally taken wildlife, firearms, and ginseng.

Behind every hardworking K9 is a unique bond with their handler, and sometimes that partnership shines brightest when the cameras catch an unscripted moment.

Trump Accounts May Create Millionaire Gen-Beta Retirees

Contributions are now flowing after the Treasury Department launched its much-anticipated Trump account app this week. Any child under the age of 18 with a Social Security number can participate, and US citizens born between January 2025 and December 2028 can receive a $1,000 government deposit. Maximum annual contributions are set at $5,000, with the money automatically invested in low-cost index funds. It’s a fantastic approach to savings, according to Adam Bergman, a tax attorney and founder of IRA Financial, one that will give millions of young Americans a financial head start by the time they reach adulthood. The biggest impact of the accounts, though, could actually be felt many decades down the line, when the emerging generation of Americans is ready to retire.

It is with profound sadness that Sheriff Smith and the Athens County Sheriff's Office reflect on the life, legacy, and service of Lt. Steve Sedwick.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Lisa, the entire Sedwick family, and all who had the privilege of knowing and loving Steve.

Steve began his law enforcement career with the Albany Police Department in 1992 before joining the Athens County Sheriff's Office as a Special Deputy in 1993 and becoming a full-time Deputy Sheriff in 1995. Over the next 25 years, he served our community with honor as a Deputy, Detective, Sergeant, and Lieutenant before retiring in 2020. Earlier this year, Steve returned to the Sheriff's Office in the Concealed Carry and Evidence Division, continuing a lifetime of service even while facing his greatest personal challenge.

For more than three decades, Steve dedicated his life to serving and protecting the citizens of Athens County. Throughout his career, Steve investigated and solved countless criminal cases, crimes against children, and earned numerous commendations for his dedication and service. He approached every assignment with professionalism, integrity, and genuine concern for the people he served.

Rest Easy Brother. Prayers for his family of blue and blood.πŸ™πŸ»
