Yesterday I spent time at the National Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C., honoring the heroes who gave their lives in service to others.
I was also honored to accept an invitation from President Trump to attend dinner at the Rose Garden Club at the White House as we begin Police Week in our nationβs capital.

Elon Musk is joining President Trump on a major trip to Beijing, signaling a notable shift after the pairβs well-documented falling out in 2025.
The Tesla CEO will be traveling alongside other corporate heavyweights like Apple's Tim Cook and BlackRockβs Larry Fink as part of the U.S. delegation, as more than a dozen business leaders from Wall Street to Silicon Valley join the trip.
Trump is preparing for a high-profile meeting with President Xi, with economic cooperation and corporate ties expected to take center stage in a rare show of business alignment alongside a presidential visit.
The trip could shape the tone of economic relations between the two countries going forward, as U.S. officials say the president wants to discuss the creation of a board of investment and a board of trade with China, as business leaders may prove to be just as much in the spotlight as the bilateral meeting itself.

On June 18, 1984, Deputy Jimmie R. Henry responded to the crash of a Marine Corps F/A-18 Hornet on Santa Catalina Island, where the wreckage sparked a 30-acre brushfire west of Avalon. While assisting at the scene, Deputy Henry and two fellow deputies were exposed to toxic smoke from the burning aircraft before the Navy restricted access due to hazardous classified materials, including graphite components. Navy personnel later arrived wearing protective suits, but the deputies had already been exposed.
All three deputies later suffered serious health complications. Deputy Henry developed pneumonia, pulmonary fibrosis, and chronic lung disease, eventually requiring a lung transplant. His declining health forced his retirement from the Sheriffβs Department on October 25, 1990. Despite receiving a lung transplant in early 1995, he passed away on May 12, 1995, at UCLA Medical Center at the age of 49.
Deputy Henry had served with the Sheriffβs Department since July 10, 1972. He was survived by his wife, Susan, and son, David.

On May 12, 1995, Deputies Stephen Blair and Robert Lyons contacted two suspicious men while patrolling the 5200 block of Walnut Avenue in Lynwood after seeing one of them appear to discard a firearm into a yard. As the deputies exited their patrol car, one suspect stopped while the other continued walking away.
Deputy Lyons focused on the suspect near the patrol car when gunfire suddenly erupted. Seeking cover, he saw Deputy Blair fall after being struck in the upper torso. Despite his wounds, Deputy Blair managed to return fire before succumbing to his injuries.
Deputy Blair was transported to Long Beach Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:08 p.m. He was 31 years old.
Both suspects were later arrested. The gunman, a career criminal facing a possible third-strike prison sentence, was convicted of first-degree murder in July 1996 and sentenced to death.
A 10-year veteran of the Los Angeles County Sheriffβs Department, Deputy Blair was survived by his wife, Dana, and his three sons: Stephen, Joseph, and Michael.
