A Virginia doctor who prescribed more than 500,000 doses of opioids in two years was sentenced to 40 years in prison on Wednesday for leading what prosecutors called an interstate drug distribution ring. The overprescription of painkillers is one of the roots of the nationโ€™s opioid crisis, and patients of Dr. Joel Smithers traveled hundreds of miles from neighboring states to pick up oxymorphone, oxycodone, hydromorphone and fentanyl, according to law enforcement officials. They said he prescribed controlled substances to every patient in the Martinsville, Va., practice he opened in August 2015. Dr. Smithers, 36, was convicted of more than 800 counts of illegally prescribing opioids, and jurors found that the drugs he prescribed caused the death of a woman from West Virginia. He faced a maximum sentence of life in prison. ๐Ÿ’Š

(WARNING 21+) On August 19, 2019, around 4:19 p.m., LAPD, uniformed patrol officers, assigned to Mission Division, received and responded to a "Family Dispute" radio call for service at the 13100 block of Ottoman Street. When the officers arrived at the location they met with the person reporting, who directed them to the suspect (later identified as) Carlos Torres Jr. The officers encountered Torres on the front porch and attempted to speak with him. Torres then pointed the handgun at the officers and fired at them, which precipitated an OIS. (WARNING 21+) As Torres continued to run west bound on Ottoman Street, a second OIS occurred. Torres then ran through a residential property on Ottoman Street and into the rear east/west alley of that location. A responding Foothill Division, Gang Enforcement Detail unit, saw Torres in the alley and stopped their patrol unit at the mouth of the alley on Arleta Avenue. Torres again raised his handgun in the direction of the officers, at which time a third OIS occurred. Torres collapsed in the alley and was taken into custody without further incident. The Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced Torres deceased. A .22 caliber handgun was located at scene and recovered as evidence. Attorneys for thousands of victims of the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history have said that they reached a settlement expected to pay between $735 million and $800 million to those who sued over the Las Vegas massacre. The amount of the settlement with MGM Resorts International depends on the number of plaintiffs who take part, according to a statement on Thursday from Las Vegas law firm Eglet Adams. The firm represents nearly 2,500 victims and made the announcement just days after the second anniversary of the massacre. Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed against the owner of the MGM-owned Mandalay Bay resort where the gunman opened fire into an outdoor concert on October 1, 2017. The casino giant also owns the music venue where 58 people died and hundreds were injured.
Speaking at an energy forum in Moscow Vladimir Putin said: 'I may disappoint you but I don't share the common excitement about the speech by Greta Thunberg. No one has explained to Greta that the modern world is complex and different and...people in Africa or in many Asian countries want to live at the same wealth level as in Sweden. Go and explain to developing countries why they should continue living in poverty and not be like Sweden.'
