Today marks 35 years since the beating of Rodney King in Lake View Terrace, California.
An amateur video captures the beating of Rodney King by four Los Angeles Police Department officers.
King is pulled over after a high speed chase on Interstate 210. Officers attempt to arrest him after it is determined he is intoxicated. When King resists, the officers begin using force to suppress him. As King continues to resist, the force becomes greater and the officers begin beating him with their batons.
The video of the beating, shot by area resident George Holliday, is picked up by the national news media. Four Los Angeles Police Officers are charged with using excessive force; on April 29, three are acquitted while the jury cannot reach a verdict on the fourth.
Hours after the verdict is announced, riots lasting six days ensue across Los Angeles and surrounding communities. They result in sixty-three deaths, over 2,300 more injured and millions of dollars in damages to local businesses. Only after the California Army National Guard, the United States Army, and the United States Marine Corps are brought in to assist local law enforcement are the riots suppressed.

The NY Times took California to task for an elections process out of the "pretelegraph era." Not only does it take a month to count votes, but our voter rolls are a mess, ballots are mailed to everyone (requested or not) and Voter ID is banned. The whole system breeds distrust.
