On February 26th, 1978, Deputy Gregory Low and Reserve Deputy Charles Plumleigh were responding to a burglary in progress call in the Antelope Valley when they were broadsided by another radio car in the intersection of 30th Street West and Avenue K in Lancaster.
Deputy Low, 30, died later that day at Antelope Valley Hospital. Reserve Deputy Plumleigh, 21, succumbed to his injuries on March 1st. The two deputies in the car that struck Plumleigh and Lowβs vehicle suffered minor injuries. The impact of the collision separated the engine and the two front wheels from the rest of Low and Plumleighβs patrol car.
Deputy Low was an eight-year veteran of the Department. Reserve Deputy Plumleigh had only been with the LASD for a year.
Each year deputies from Lancaster Station stand vigil at the scene of this collision.

The Crisp County Sheriff's Office, Georgia mourns the loss of Corporal Lori Benjamin, who passed away at her mother's home in Byromville, Sunday, March 1, after a courageous year-long battle with pancreatic cancer.
Lori began her career with the Sheriff's Office in July of 2021. In August of 2022-just one year after joining the agency-she was promoted to Corporal, a testament to her dedication, leadership, and unwavering commitment to her fellow officers and the citizens she served.
Earlier this year, Lori was nominated for the Michael Sangster's Warrior Award, a
fitting recognition of the strength and perseverance she displays every single day. Sheriff Billy Hancock shared that Corporal Benjamin always put her fellow employees first. Even while undergoing chemotherapy and facing the difficult battles that cancer brings, she would walk through the doors wearing a bandana due to hair loss-with a smile on her face and a heart devoted to the job she was sworn to uphold.
As the disease progressed, it became harder for Lori to report for duty physically, but she constantly stayed in contact with her Sheriff and coworkers. Every conversation ended the same way-talking about "when I come back." Her hope, her fight, and her love for this office never wavered.
Cpl. Benjamin was more than a Jailer; she was family. She embodied courage, selflessness, and faithfulness to duty. Her legacy will live on in the halls of this office and in the hearts of those who had the honor to serve beside her.
Rest Easy Sister. Prayers for her family of blue and blood.ππ»
