We would like to share an important update regarding K9 Arwin, a distinguished member of the HPD K9 Unit.
K9 Arwinβs career has been nothing short of extraordinary. Over six years of service, he played a vital role in apprehending countless suspects and uncovering critical evidence at numerous crime scenes. His contributions extended beyond the fieldβArwin was a dominant force at trials across the West Coast and was most recently honored as βTop Dogβ by the Western States Police Canine Association, a title that cements his legacy as one of the top K9s in the state.
On Monday, October 20th, during a routine training session, K9 Arwin sustained a significant injury. His partner, Officer Higgins, promptly transported him to a local veterinary hospital, where doctors diagnosed extensive ligament and tendon damage requiring surgery. Given the severity of the injury and K9 Arwinβs planned retirement in January of 2026, the very difficult decision was made to officially retire him on October 20th. The decision to immediately retire Arwin was not made lightly and was based on the following factors: he was weeks away from retirement, the severity of his injuries and the length of anticipated recovery would prevent him from working in the field prior to his scheduled retirement, the K9 Unit did not have funding in their operational budget for unanticipated significant medical expenses, and euthanizing him was the only other option presented. Funding does exist in two separate donation accounts, including one that belongs solely to the K9 Unit, which would have covered medical expenses. However, the K9 Unit members elected not to use that funding. To prevent him from being euthanized, Officer Higgins agreed to assume ownership of Arwin to cover his medical expenses.
Arwin underwent surgery yesterday to repair his injuries, and he has another scheduled for today. We sincerely hope he is home recovering with his family soon.
We extend our deepest thanks to K9 Arwin and Officer Higgins for their unwavering dedication and service to HPD and the community. K9 Arwinβs courage, loyalty, and excellence have left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege to work alongside him.
Thank you, K9 Arwin.

A frightening scene unfolded at a Halloween house party in San Bernardino's Roosevelt neighborhood on Saturday night, where many teenagers were in attendance.
Video captured by @izek12356 IG shows the chaotic scene as partygoers, some dressed in costumes, rushed to flee when gunfire broke out following a fight around 10:30 p.m. at a residence near the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Evans Street.
The shots went off as SBPD officers were already at the scene for an unruly party call, prompting them to call for assistance. Deputies from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, as well as officers from the California Highway Patrol and the San Bernardino Community College District Police, responded.
One male, thought to be a juvenile, sustained one gunshot wound. He was quickly taken away by paramedics, escorted by police who were still attempting to clear the area. No arrests have been made.
It's estimated that over 250 people were in attendance at the party.

DEVELOPING: Heavy rainfall caused substantial flooding Sunday night, submerging portions of U.S. Highway 441 and several streets in downtown Eustis, Florida.
Authorities are urging residents to avoid the affected areas.
Mid-Sunday evening numerous vehicles became stranded on U.S. Highway 441 as rising water reached above bumpers, while others attempted to slowly navigate through the flooded roadway. Downtown intersections, including the frequently flooded Orange Avenue and Bay Street, were also underwater.
Storm drains downtown were seen overflowing, with water gushing out instead of draining away. Officials also received reports of flooding inside homes near the downtown area.
