The Omaha Police Department, Nebraska has identified the officer who was shot in the head early Monday morning as Officer Steven Murcek, a 15-year veteran of the force. 🙏
Chief Schmaderer confirmed that Officer Murcek is talking and recovering in the hospital after a terrifying encounter at the QuikTrip near 120th and Dodge. According to investigators, Officer Murcek and his partner, Officer Krystal Bartlett, responded around 6 a.m. to multiple 911 calls from a man reportedly acting erratically and making incoherent statements.
The suspect, who mentioned the KKK and claimed his vehicle and phone were “compromised”, was told to leave the property or face arrest. At 6:19 a.m., while Officer Murcek attempted to handcuff him, the suspect resisted, pulled out a gun from his waistband, and shot Officer Murcek in the head. Murcek returned fire and took cover with Officer Bartlett before reporting the shooting to dispatch. Moments later, 911 calls reported the suspect inside a McDonald’s near 114th and Dodge.
OPD SWAT moved in quickly and took him into custody at 6:34 a.m., recovering a gun, magazines, and ammunition. Officer Murcek was rushed to Bergan Mercy Hospital in critical condition, where Chief Schmaderer and Mayor John Ewing Jr. visited him and his family.

Stuart Stevens, a former Greenville, NC Police Department Officer was killed last week while transporting Hurricane Helene relief supplies.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol , the crash happened around 7:45 a.m. on U.S. 13, just south of Burnette Road near Farmville. Troopers say Stevens, 60, of Snow Hill, lost control of his pickup truck pulling a trailer while trying to pass another vehicle. The truck ran off the road, hit a ditch, and overturned. Stevens died at the scene. He was remembered by many as a dedicated public servant who continued helping others even after his time in law enforcement.
