Since the California Firefighters Memorial was unveiled in 2002, more than 1,500 names—city, state, local, and volunteer firefighters—have been added to the wall in Capitol Park.

This year, five of CAL FIRE’s own were newly inscribed: Howard Hedges, Anthony Huennekens, David J. Donley, Christopher Ward, and Mark D. Miller. Their courage and dedication will never be forgotten.

Funeral services were held Friday for Broken Arrow Oklahoma Police Recruit Franklin David Leinen, a 40-year-old Army veteran, husband and father who passed away last month during physical training after a medical emergency.

A procession followed the funeral services at First Baptist Church Broken Arrow, where fellow first responders and community members paid their respects.

Leinen was a combat veteran who served multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan as a member of the 82nd Airborne Division. After his military service, he continued working overseas for the U.S. State Department before joining the Broken Arrow Police Department.

Los Angeles Police Department’s Force Investigation Division is investigating an Officer-Involved Shooting that occurred in Rampart Division.

On August 21, 2025, at around 4:15a.m., Rampart Patrol Division uniformed officers responded to a radio call of “ADW Shots Fired,” at Vendome Street and Beverly Boulevard. The person reporting stated they heard two gunshots and multiple people yelling.

Upon arrival, officers heard gunfire coming from the rear parking lot of a business in the 3000 block of Beverly Boulevard. There they observed the suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Guillermo Calel-Acabal, inside a gray van in possession of a firearm and an Officer-Involved Shooting occurred. Following the OIS, officers ordered Calel-Acabal out of the vehicle and took him into custody without further incident.

Los Angeles Fire Department personnel transported Calel-Acabal to a local hospital where he was treated for metal fragments embedded in the top of his head and subsequently cleared for booking. Calel-Acabal was booked for 245(D)(2) PC- Assault with a Deadly Weapon (ADW) on a Police Officer with a Firearm.

A loaded black semi-automatic 9-millimeter handgun was recovered in the van between the driver and passenger seats and booked as evidence.

No officers or other community members were injured during this incident.

PETER DOOCY: "There is an account on X that tries to forecast military action based on how busy the pizza places are around the Pentagon... Have you guys thought about maybe just going to the cafeteria?"

SECRETARY HEGSETH: "I'm aware of that account. I hadn't thought of just going to the cafeteria. I've thought of just ordering lots of pizza on random nights just to throw everybody off. Some Friday night when you see a bunch of Domino's orders, it might just be me on an app, throwing the whole system off. So we keep everybody off balance."
