Mississippi: Sunday morning, a Stone County Sheriff’s Office deputy was injured in a shooting.

Stone County Sheriff Todd Stewart says a deputy was attempting to pick up a suspect with a misdemeanor warrant on Carl Taylor Road.

After making contact, an unrelated person in the home ran from the deputy, then opened fire, striking the deputy in the shoulder. The deputy returned fire, striking the unrelated suspect in the leg.

Both the deputy and the unrelated suspect are being taken to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

UPDATE: Authorities have identified the gunman responsible for the deadly attack at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc as 40-year-old Thomas Jacob Sanford, a resident of Burton, Michigan.

Sanford, a U.S. Marine veteran who served in Iraq from 2004 to 2008, according to social media posts by his family, launched a violent assault on the congregation late Sunday morning.

Investigators say Sanford drove his Chevy Silverado into the church’s entrance before opening fire with a semi-automatic rifle on worshippers inside.

At least two people were killed and nine others wounded in the attack, with authorities warning the death toll could rise once investigators are able to fully search the building.

Hundreds of worshippers had been inside at the time.

Bill Essayli, United States Attorney for the Central District of California, commented on California's "No Secret Police Act." What it does is prohibit most law enforcement officers, including federal immigration agents, from covering their faces while on duty. While it does not take effect until Jan. 1, 2026.

He said the federal government has taken no action other than directing agencies that California has no jurisdiction over federal agencies and agents. "So they've been told to basically disregard the law," Essayli said. "It has no force or effect on the federal government."

Hero cops responded to Grand Blanc LDS church shooting in 30 seconds, killed gunman Thomas Sanford within 8 minutes.

Local police responding to the shooting at Michigan Latter-day Saints church Sunday morning were on the scene in just 30 seconds and killed the gunman within minutes, authorities said.

Grand Blanc Township cops received the call of a shooting around 10:25 a.m. as the church service was in full swing, police said.

One of the officers and a worker with the nearby Department of Natural Resources were on the church grounds within 32 seconds, said Police Chief William Renye during a press conference.

The gunman, 40-year-old Iraq War vet Thomas Sanford, was “neutralized” in the church parking lot by 10:33 a.m., Renye said.
