Protesters in Hong Kong are using tennis racquets to fend off tear gas while police fired live bullets for the first time in the weeks-long demonstrations. An afternoon rally in the district of Tsuen Wan spiralled into violent clashes on Sunday with officers caught isolated by masked youths wielding sticks and throwing rocks. Tensions escalated when police began hoisting warning flags before firing tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowd, who reacted angrily by throwing bricks and molotov cocktails. In one instance, several police officers drew their sidearms. 'According to my understanding, just now a gunshot was fired by a colleague,' Superintendent Leung Kwok Win told the press. The 5 men and 1 woman range in age from 62 to 85 and were found in possession of magazines and condoms in the Grace Richardson conservation area in Fairfield, CT. Two years after Hurricane Irma slammed through South Florida, killing scores of people and knocking out power to three-quarters of the state, four nursing home workers are facing charges in the deaths of 12 residents felled by the searing heat the storm left behind. Arrest warrants were issued Monday for three nurses and an administrator at the since-shuttered Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, about 20 miles north of Miami. Operators of the center failed to evacuate for three days despite a lack of air conditioning that caused temperatures in the building to soar.
An Oklahoma judge on Monday ordered Johnson & Johnson and its subsidiaries to pay $572 million to help abate the opioid crisis in Oklahoma, a landmark decision likely to be appealed to the state's highest court. The ruling came in the first state opioid case to reach trial. The state previously settled with OxyContin-maker Purdue Pharma and Israel's Teva Pharmaceutical for a total of more than $350 million. Oklahoma Attorney General Mike Hunter says opioid overdoses killed 4,653 people in the state from 2007 to 2017. The state has said it will take $17.5 billion over 30 years to to abate the crisis.
