A massive layer of volcanic rock carrying multitudes of sea organisms could soon aid in the recovery of the Great Barrier Reef, which has been "bleached" and permanently damaged by climate change. The "raft" was captured by NASA Earth Observatory days after an underwater volcano 130 feet down may have erupted near the island of Tonga. The resulting raft of pumice rock is the size of Manhattan and is floating toward Australia, NASA said.Days later, an Australian couple sailing to Vanatu on a catamaran encountered the raft. The sheer volume of the mass, made up of "pumice stones from marble to basketball size," blocked their ship.🗿#science

American millennials place significantly less value on patriotism, religion and having children than the generations that came before them, according to a new poll. A survey released Sunday by the Wall Street Journal and NBC News found that the values unifying the nation are becoming fewer and farther between. The two outlets compared data taken from a poll of Americans' most cherished values 21 years ago and August of 2019. Back then, the top rated categories were hard work, patriotism, commitment to religion and having children. Today, the only trait that remains at the top of the list is hard work, while the other categories have fallen due to input from people between 18 and 38. 🗿

The number of calls to an FBI tip line designed to head off mass shootings and other attacks surged by 70 percent in the week after twin massacres in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, federal officials said Monday. The Federal Bureau of Investigation fielded more than 38,000 phone and online tips during the week after the shootings on the first weekend of August, up from the 22,000 tips it typically receives on a weekly basis. The surge is evidence of an America public made jittery by a steady drumbeat of mass shootings. 'Such increases are often observed after major incidents,' the FBI said in a statement. 'As always, the FBI encourages the public to remain vigilant and report any and all suspicious activity to law enforcement immediately.'👮🏻♂️

The owner of a legendary California eatery has blasted socialist presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders (left) after he was 'cranky' and 'rude' to staff during a dinner with his campaign team on Thursday. Senator Sanders had been in San Francisco to attend the Democratic National Committee's summer meeting when he stopped by the iconic John's Grill (right) on Ellis Street last week, flanked by a number of his entourage. But the owner of the 111-year-old restaurant, John Konstin (bottom), said he was less than impressed by the 77-year-old Democrat's decorum, claiming that he was 'rude' to staff and declined to shake hands or pose for photos.
As world leaders gather their resources to fight the forest fires which are devastating the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, satellite images from NASA have revealed a similar inferno raging across southern Africa. The burning forests cover an area of more than a million square miles in the Congo Basin, often described as the 'second green lung' of the planet after the Amazon itself. Like the Amazon, the African forests absorb CO2 and are sanctuaries for endangered species. Under pressure from environmentalists, G7 leaders have this week hurried to take action against the Amazon blaze, but the African fires have attracted less attention. 🔥😱

Footage shows amazing overhead shots of the annual Burning Man festival in Black Rock city, also known as the playa, in Nevada. The photos were taken by Maxar Technologies with satellite view on Monday, August 25. In 2018, an estimated 70,000 burners attended the eight day celebration where festival goers wore eccentric outfits and partied all night surrounded by massive, artist made sculptures. This year's art theme is 'metamorphosis'.The photos, taken by Maxar Technologies, gives a bird's eye view of the the expansive event as it goes into its 33rd year of production. Large and small art installations litter the desert allowing attendees to trek from one site to another, reveling in the open space. While there have been concerns in the past about the amount of sand in the area, the Associated Press reported that playa dust posed no serious health concerns 🔥much #WOW
