Deputy Sheriff Jake Kuredjian was tragically shot and killed while responding to assist another deputy and U.S. Marshals who were attempting to serve a search warrant at a home on Brooks Circle, near Thackery Lane, in Stevenson Ranch.

The suspect, a convicted felon believed to be impersonating a police officer and unlawfully in possession of a firearm, repeatedly came to the door but refused to exit the residence. As officers attempted to enter through a window, the suspect opened fire with an automatic rifle, fatally striking Deputy Kuredjian in the head.

A standoff followed, lasting several hours, before the suspect’s home caught fire and was destroyed. It was later discovered that the suspect had previously served as a police officer.

Deputy Kuredjian had been a proud member of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department for 17 years. He is remembered by his two brothers and his girlfriend.

In 2024, a portion of Interstate 5 from Lyons Avenue in Newhall to McBean Parkway in Valencia was dedicated as the Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputy Hagop “Jake” Kuredjian Memorial Highway.
