NEW: Human Smuggling Arrest | Weslaco, TX

As part of Operation Lone Star, TxDPS Troopers assisted U.S. Border Patrol today at approximately 10:46 AM with a vehicle that failed to yield near Progreso. Troopers took over the pursuit, during which the driver of a gray Ford Escort rammed his vehicle into a DPS unit, striking a marked patrol vehicle.

The suspect vehicle came to a stop in the parking lot of Mr. Gatti’s in Weslaco, where five illegal immigrants—four males and one female—bailed out. The driver, identified as Cesar Rafael Leon, 34, of Indiana, attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by HCConstablePct1.

Four of the immigrants were turned over to U.S. Border Patrol. The female, who is pregnant, was transported to Knapp Medical Center for precautionary evaluation.

Leon is facing multiple charges, including:

🔹 5 counts of Smuggling of Persons
🔹 Aggravated Assault on a Public Servant (for ramming the DPS unit)
🔹 Evading Arrest with a Vehicle
🔹 Evading Arrest on Foot

This incident highlights the dangers our Troopers and law enforcement officers face daily and the continued efforts under Operation Lone Star to combat human smuggling and keep our communities safe.

DEVELOPING: Nearly two years after former California police chief Andreas Probst was killed while cycling in Las Vegas, his relatives have filed a lawsuit against Hyundai and the teenagers accused of causing his death.

In a complaint filed Thursday, Probst’s wife, Crystal Probst, and children, Michael and Taylor Probst, alleged that a defect in the 2016 Hyundai Elantra’s anti-theft system allowed Jesus Ayala and Jzamir Keys to steal the vehicle used to fatally hit Andreas Probst.

This is the Gifford Fire that’s already burned over 72,000 acres. It’s burning thru northern Santa Barbara County and is only 3% contained. 

The far western edge of this fire is about 16 miles from Santa Maria.  Hwy 166 remains shut down as well.
