UPDATE: On Wednesday afternoon, Philly police say an officer was shot in the cityβs Overbrook neighborhood.
According to Philly police, just before 2:42 p.m. Wednesday officers at Overbrook High School near the 1900 block of North 59th Street. asked for backup due to multiple fights occurring outside the school.
They say arrests were made due to the fights.
Police say that man, who is in his 30s, then fired gunshots from what appeared to be a Ruger 57 semiautomatic pistol.
The man fired the weapon into the ground and the cartridge then ricocheted and hit a police officer under his bullet-proof vest.
The officer was rushed to Penn Presbyterian Hospital where he is in critical condition.
The 26-year-old injured officer has been with the Philadelphia Police Department for a little over a year. He was just assigned to the 19th District back in March.

One day after becoming operational for peak fire activity, CAL FIRE's Fresno Air Attack Base dispatched and reloaded a C-130H to support the Springs Fire. With additional support from Porterville Air Attack Base, Tanker 122 delivered nearly 15,000 gallons of fire retardant.
Thanks to the swift action of our air and ground crews, the fireβs forward rate of spread has been stopped. Containment is now at 85%. The C130H aircraft are crucial for wildfire suppression, offering the capability to deliver large volumes of retardant in a single flight, thereby slowing fire progression and safeguarding communities and natural resources.
During this #WildfirePreparednessWeek, we emphasize that your preparedness is equally essential. Develop an evacuation plan, establish defensible space around your residence, prepare a go-bag, and register for emergency alerts.

On April 16, 2025, Deputy A. Whisman was headed home from an extra job when he observed a vehicle occupied by a male driver who was driving erratic. Deputy Whisman conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle for the traffic violation. Upon contacting the driver and only occupant of the vehicle, Deputy Whisman could tell that the driver was very emotional and appeared to be distressed, so he asked the driver if he was okay. The driver began speaking with Deputy Whisman and explained to him that he had just retired from the military, after serving for 22 years. He then told Deputy Whisman that his wife of 19 years had just left him, and that he was having a very bad night to the point that he was planning on taking his own life when he got home. Deputy Whisman sat on the side of the road and spoke with the male for several minutes to help him take a different path. By the end of the conversation, the male looked at Deputy Whisman and told him that he was his, βsaving angel.β The male also told Deputy Whisman that had it not been for his kindness and compassion of the situation that he was in, that he would have gone home and carried out his plans of ending his life.
The morning after the stop Deputy Whisman was informed by his Lieutenant that the male from the traffic stop had brought him a gift and a note. The male gave Deputy Whisman an Official US Naval True North Compass that was presented to him at his last post as Chief. The note reads as follows:
Austin,
Sometimes when weβre fighting demons, God sends us help. I was in a hurry to complete a mission, but you stopped me and lent a kind ear.
You treated me with compassion, dignity, and respect.

UPDATE: Columbia says two of their Public Safety Officers were injured when pro-Hamas terrorists forced their way into Butler Library, and they have now requested NYPD to respond to campus. They say the protesters refuse to identify themselves & they believe a βsignificantβ number arenβt students.
Columbia statement:
βThe individuals who disrupted activities in Butler Reading Room 301 still refuse to identify themselves and leave the building. Due to the number of individuals participating in the disruption inside and outside of the building, a large group of people attempting to force their way into Butler Library creating a safety hazard, and what we believe to be the significant presence of individuals not affiliated with the University, Columbia has taken the necessary step of requesting the presence of NYPD to assist in securing the building and the safety of our community.
Sadly, during the course of this disruption, two of our Columbia Public Safety Officers sustained injuries during a crowd surge when individuals attempted to force their way into the building and into Room 301. These actions are outrageous.
Individuals participating in the Reading Room 301 disruption were repeatedly asked for identification and to leave, and were repeatedly told that failure to comply would result in violations of our rules and policies and possible arrest for trespassing. We have been clear from the outset about applying our protocols and advising participants of the potential consequences of not complying. Requesting the presence of the NYPD is not the outcome we wanted, but it was absolutely necessary to secure the safety of our community.β
