At least one person has died after remnants of Tropical Storm Barry battered New York with torrential rain, lightning and gusty winds leaving streets flooded and water gushing through subway stations on Wednesday. A Connecticut man died after a tree was struck by lightning and a large limb fell onto his car roof at around 5 p.m. as he was driving on Bridgeport's Park Avenue. Police found Jarrod Marotto, 21, of Southington, unconscious behind the wheel and he died on the way to hospital, WABC-TV reported. 'There are plenty of showers and thunderstorms around the area this evening,' the National Weather Service warned in a 5pm tweet. 'These storms could produce strong gusty winds and heavy downpours. Remember, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 10pm, and a Flash Flood Watch until 5am.' ๐ฆ๐ฑ #NYC
The heatwave that has been roasting much of the U.S. in recent days is just getting warmed up, with temperatures expected to soar to dangerous levels through the weekend. Communities are preparing by offering buildings as cooling centers and asking residents to check in on relatives and neighbors. Officials also are concerned about smog, which is exacerbated by the heat and makes it more difficult for certain people to breathe, including the very young, the elderly and people with asthma or lung diseases.๐ฅต

Twelve Israelis aged between 16 and 18 covered their faces as they appeared in court in Cyprus on Thursday accused of gang-raping a 19-year-old British woman at a hotel in Ayia Napa on Wednesday morning. In her police complaint, the woman said she was at a party with one of the men who she met three days earlier and had previously slept with, before they went back to the hotel where they were both staying. Cypriot reports say the woman was taken to a room when the other 11 men burst in and attacked her while laughing and filming on their phones. The men were in court for a bail hearing where police asked to extend their detention by at least a week while they examine DNA evidence. ๐ฎ๐ปโโ๏ธ

WARNING GRAPHIC CONTENT! Graeme Mitchley was driving out of Kruger National Park when a brown snake eagle swooped down on an adder that had been crawling across the road. He watched as the eagle picked up the snake - but rather than using its talons to kill the reptile, which is common, the bird chose to eat it alive instead. ๐๐ฆ

The Central Processing Center in McAllen, Texas, colloquially known as Ursula for its street address, is a retrofitted warehouse that can hold more than 1,000 people for Customs and Border Protection processing. The facility gained notoriety last year, when photos showed the 77,000 square-foot building crammed with children sleeping on the floor amid the child separation uproar. Now, cameras for CBS News have been given unlimited access to the facility, where migrants reported sanitary conditions and ample hot meals for the 815 families currently being held there.
