A huge prehistoric settlement dating back 9,000 years unearthed near Jerusalem by Israeli archaeologists during preparations for a new highway could rewrite the history of humans in the region. The archaeological team discovered large buildings, including rooms that were used for living, as well as public facilities and places of ritual. Between the buildings, alleys were exposed, bearing evidence of the settlement's advanced level of planning. The team also found storage sheds that contained large quantities of legumes, particularly lentils, whose seeds were remarkably preserved throughout the millennia. 🗿 #science #history

Federal data shows shipments of prescription opioid painkillers exploded by 50% to 12.6 BILLION pills in 2012 even as the drug crisis grew. The data, released this week by a federal court in Ohio as part of a far-reaching opioids case, shows that companies distributed 76 billion pills between 2006 and 2012 as drug deaths mounted. Information is seen presented by State's attorney in the opening statements during a trial in Oklahoma. A judge in a separate trial ordered the release of new data this week.

Executives from Amazon, Google, Facebook and Apple testified before a House antitrust panel, which is investigating big tech companies' market dominance. Nate Sutton, an associate general counsel at Amazon, said his company doesn't use 'individual data to directly compete' with third-party sellers that use its platform to reach the same customers they target. Rhode Island Democratic Rep. David Cicilline, who chairs the subcommittee, was skeptical. He believes Amazon uses the data it collects about popular products to direct consumers to Amazon's own offerings. Cicilline reminded Sutton twice that he had sworn to tell the truth.

Protesters against building a giant telescope on top of a mountain some Native Hawaiians consider sacred said they tried unsuccessfully Tuesday to negotiate access up Mauna Kea while the road to the summit is closed in preparation for construction equipment to be taken up. Kaho'okahi Kanuha, one of the protest leaders, told reporters that activists asked state officials if they could have one vehicle access the road daily. He said that in exchange, protesters would have allowed workers at the mountain's 13 existing telescopes to travel freely, but no agreement was reached. Protesters won't allow National Guard members to pass, Kanuha said. 🗿#facepalm
