As the owners put it — when outdoor dining stops, the rent isn’t put on hold, employee payroll doesn’t stop but business drastically drops. Dave Foldes, the owner of Cronies Sports Bar and Grill, told FOX 11 he was keeping outdoor dining open to protect his staff’s financial health. He said the business can’t survive on just takeout, which he said only netted $400 last Tuesday. "We really have no choice, we’re barely getting by, we’re losing $5 to $10 grand a month in our busiest normal months," he said. "We’re following all the regulations that the rest of the state and country are following, we just need to survive and I need to make sure my staff survives because they can’t afford it." At Swork Coffee in Eagle Rock, they are calling their outdoor dining area a "peaceful protest," a reference to one of the two exceptions in Los Angeles County for public gatherings, which currently allows gatherings for places of worship and protests.

The city contract with a law firm to investigate potential Columbus police misconduct during protests and riots earlier this year is still ongoing, though if it's not already out of money, it's close. As of Sept. 30, when the city Department of Public Safety received its last invoice from BakerHostetler, the investigation had almost depleted the $550,000 allocated it by the Columbus City Council. About $7,700 remained in the appropriation, with three active cases yet to be completed at the time, said Glenn McEntyre, spokesman for the department. The investigation was announced by Mayor Andrew J. Ginther after what many city officials perceived to be excessive uses of force by officers during anti-police protestors in the wake of George Floyd's death in Minneapolis police custody in May. The contract was originally set at $50,000, then was expanded in July with the approval of the city council to $550,000. (Read more.)

Surveillance backs-up Staten Island bar owner hitting deputy with car because he was ‘scared': lawyers. Lawyers for Daniel Presti, the Staten Island bar owner accused of hitting a deputy with his car Saturday night, say surveillance footage of the incident shows their client “running for his life from unidentified individuals” because they were dressed in dark clothing and Presti did not know they were law enforcement officers. The surveillance footage, provided to Fox News from Presti's lawyers, shows a man running down a street and getting into a vehicle as two other men, dressed in all black, run after him. The first man manages to get into the vehicle before the other two approach the passenger side. One of them stands in front of the vehicle as it accelerates forward. The man appears to be hanging on the hood of the engine as it drives out of frame. (Read more.)
