Texas Governor Greg Abbott is sending state police resources to the City of Dallas in response to a spike in violent crime. The governor responded to a request for assistance from the Dallas Police Department after city leaders cut the police overtime budget by $7 million. “The rise in violent crime in the city of Dallas is unacceptable, and the Texas Department of Public Safety will assist the Dallas Police Department in their efforts to protect the community and reduce this surge in crime,” Governor Abbott said in a written statement. “Every Texan deserves to feel safe in their own community, and the State of Texas will continue to provide the city of Dallas with the resources they need to crack down on this heinous activity and protect Dallas residents.” (Read more.)

National forecast. A quiet forecast for most as we head into the weekend. The Northwest is still seeing rain and snow and a weak system will bring wet weather over parts of the Plains into the Great Lakes this weekend, but otherwise no major storms to track, and for that we're thankful.

Last year 3 million people traveled thru LAX for the Thanksgiving holiday. With health officials discouraging travel this year and reduced seating on airlines, there’s no estimate on how many will travel this year. Today the airport seems pretty empty.

The number of Americans seeking unemployment aid rose last week to 742,000, the first increase in five weeks and a sign that the resurgent viral outbreak is likely slowing the economy and forcing more companies to cut jobs.

The Labor Department's report Thursday showed that applications for benefits rose from 711,000 in the previous week. Claims had soared to 6.9 million in March when the pandemic first intensified. Before the pandemic, applications typically hovered about 225,000 a week.

The economy’s modest recovery is increasingly at risk, with newly confirmed daily infections in the United States having exploded 80% over the past two weeks to the highest levels on record. More states and cities are issuing mask mandates, limiting the size of gatherings, restricting restaurant dining, closing gyms or reducing the hours and capacity of bars, stores and other businesses. At least 15 states have tightened curbs on businesses to try to slow infections.

Evidence is emerging that consumers are losing confidence in the economic outlook and pulling back on shopping, eating out and other activities. Spending on 30 million credit and debit cards tracked by JPMorgan Chase fell 7.4% earlier this month compared with a year ago. That marked a sharp drop from two weeks earlier. Consumer sentiment also declined in early November and is down nearly 21% from a year ago, according to a University of Michigan survey.

The number of people who are continuing to receive traditional unemployment benefits fell to 6.4 million, the government said, from 6.8 million. That shows that more Americans are finding jobs and no longer receiving unemployment aid. But it also indicates that many jobless people have used up their state unemployment aid — which typically expires after six months — and have transitioned to a federal extended benefits program that lasts 13 more weeks.

The worsening viral outbreak coincides with the impending expiration of two federal unemployment programs at year’s end that could eliminate benefits for 9.1 million people, according to a report from The Century Foundation. Congress has so far failed to agree on any new stimulus package for jobless individuals and struggling businesses. The cutoff of aid will sharply reduce income for the unemployed, force a further reduction in their spending and perhaps weaken the economy.

A Michigan sheriff’s deputy has been fired for posting a “disgusting” photo of a carved watermelon intended to depict Kamala Harris, department officials said. The part-time Oakland County Sheriff’s Office deputy, Sherry Prose, was terminated immediately once department officials learned of the vile Facebook post, officials told The Post in a statement Thursday. The post, first reported Monday by WXYZ, features several carved pumpkins meant to depict several political figures, including President Trump, President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President Mike Pence. A second photo, however, shows Harris as a carved watermelon. “Trump, Biden, Pence and Kamala,” the post read. “Happy Halloween.” Correlating watermelons to blacks is a relic of the “past” and is “linked to buffoonery and to ‘less than’,” Rev. Dr. Wendell, president of Detroit’s NAACP branch, told the station. #facepalm

Louisville, KY – The man accused of shooting two Louisville Metropolitan Police Department (LMPD) officers during the Breonna Taylor riots was indicted on 35 charges on Monday morning but none of them were attempted murder. The commonwealth’s attorney announced on Nov. 17 that a grand jury had indicted 26-year-old Larynzo Johnson on two counts of assault in the first degree and 33 counts of wanton endangerment in the first degree. Johnson stands accused of shooting two police officers at the protest and endangering the crowd of protesters around them. Prosecutors said he opened fire on officers doing crowd control during riots at about 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 23 near Broadway and Brook Street. Police arrested Johnson near the scene of the shooting only minutes after it occurred. (Read more.)

A sheriff’s deputy’s dashcam video that showed the fatal #shooting of two Black Florida teenagers was released on Tuesday. The Brevard County Sheriff’s Office posted a 56-second clip of the dashcam video on Facebook showing the Friday incident that resulted in the deaths of Angelo Crooms, 16, and Sincere Pierce, 18, in Cocoa, Fla. Sheriff Wayne Ivey named two deputies as involved in the case: Jafet Santiago-Miranda, who was the shooting officer, and Carson Hendren. Both are on paid administrative leave as the situation is investigated, as is standard procedure. Ivey said the deputies were pursuing the teenagers in an investigation into a possible stolen vehicle. The dashcam footage does not include sound until 36 seconds into the video, when a deputy directs the vehicle to stop at least eight times. (Read the Full Story.)
