Several officers have been injured in Warsaw as far-right protesters threw firecrackers, stones and bottles at riot police. The protests take place each year as Poland recalls its independence after World War I.
Police arrested 36 people in Warsaw at a violent far-right protest that took place in the Polish capital despite a ban, authorities said on Thursday. Thousands of Polish nationalists and far-right radicals took to the streets of central Warsaw on Wednesday, the day commemorating Polish independence, although the annual march had been banned by Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski due to the coronavirus pandemic.During a violence at the demonstrations, 35 police officers were injured and three were still being treated at hospital, a police spokesperson said. The right-wing and nationalist Independence March, which authorities had banned due to the coronavirus pandemic, ended up in participants clashing with police in several areas across the capital, wounding several police officers and one press photographer. Participants also shot fireworks in the windows of buildings with posters supporting the Women’s Strike, setting one of the flats on fire.
