Tropical Storm Eta dumped torrents of blustery rain on Florida’s west coast as it moved over Florida after making landfall north of the heavily populated Tampa Bay area Thursday morning. The storm slogged ashore near Cedar Key, Florida, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. The National Hurricane Center in Miami predicted Eta would then move northeast across Florida as it loses strength. Eta became a Category 1 hurricane early Wednesday but was downgraded to a tropical storm by the afternoon. There were no immediate reports of any injuries, serious damage or flooding in the Tampa Bay area as the storm skirted past that region Wednesday afternoon. Several tornado warnings were issued, but there were no reports of one touching down. Eta is the record-breaking 12th named tropical system to strike the continental U.S. this season.

A 53-year-old man was found stabbed to death inside a minivan in Staten Island, NYPD said Thursday. Meanwhile, in Florida. Yep, this monster is real. Caught on camera during Hurricane Eta in Naples.
After being ravaged by wildfires, California has won a temporary reprieve. Temperatures plummeted, rain pelted much of the state, and snow dusted the mountains in the past week. Cooler weather, however, is little comfort to firefighters who know the state is still in the prime of what many still call fire season. Firefighters, however, are determined not to call it that.
"We are trying to break away from the terminology," said Battalion Chief Issac Sanchez, spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, or Cal Fire. "There really wasn't a flip of the switch." In the past, Southern California's fire season ran from about May or June to November, he said.
Now, it seems as if wildfires can break out just about any time of the year. But the worst blazes are still reserved for July and August, when the state is baking, then later in the fall when the flames are pushed by hot, dry and capricious winds – Santa Anas in the south and the Diablos in the north.
This is the worst year ever for wildfires. Five of the six of the largest wildfires in California history started in August and September. Collectively they burned more than 2,500 square miles, an area about the size of Delaware. The fires killed 22 people.
While fire departments may not refer to fire season per se in their public declarations, their leases of firefighting aircraft and other contract services still focus on the most dangerous months of the year.
For more than two decades, for example, Los Angeles County has leased a pair of Bombardier CL-415 SuperScooper aircraft for 90 days at a time from Quebec, Canada, to augment its own fleet of water-dropping helicopters. The amphibious planes skim the surface of lakes or the ocean to fill tanks with more than1,600 gallons of water that can be dropped on the flames. Their arrival this year was announced in early September.
Using the term "fire season" also leads to fears that the public will let up its guard by becoming careless about campfires, fireworks, cigarette butts or other sources of flame that could spark a major conflagration.
Not referring to fire season "was more of a messaging thing. It was easy for the public to assume since we're not in fire season, we're not in fire danger," Sanchez said.
Still, experts say there is no getting around how the effects of climate change and generally warmer temperatures are lengthening the most intense periods of the year for fires.

Interstate 94 in Minnesota closed due to fiery crash as snow squall limits visibility. A fiery crash shut both directions of a major interstate in Minnesota on Thursday as a snow squall was blasting across the state. The Minnesota State Patrol said the accident happened just before 9 a.m. local time and shut lanes in both directions on Interstate 94 in Monticello, located about 40 miles northwest of downtown Minneapolis. A nut with a submachine gun killed one man and injured two others when he opened fire on their car in Queens early Thursday. The gunman walked up to the victims’ silver Nissan Altima on 235th Street near 121st Avenue in Laurelton around 1:30 a.m. and let off several rounds, striking a 25-year-old man — discovered in the driver’s seat with gunshot wounds to the head and neck, NYPD said. Another 25-year-old man was found outside the car with gunshot wounds to the left hand and left shoulder, police said. And a 24-year-old man who was also found outside the car was shot in the back, authorities said. The man in the driver’s seat was pronounced dead on scene, and the two others were taken to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in stable condition. The motive was unclear, and no arrests were immediately made. A MAC-10 submachinge gun was recovered outside the car, according to police sources.
