LOS ANGELES - Federal authorities are expected to vote Tuesday on what likely sparked a fire aboard a scuba dive boat last year that killed 34 people off the coast of Southern California. The pre-dawn blaze aboard the Conception is one of California’s deadliest maritime disasters, prompting both criminal and safety investigations into the Sept. 2, 2019, tragedy that claimed the lives of 33 passengers and one crew member on a Labor Day weekend expedition near an island off Santa Barbara. The National Transportation Safety Board will vote Tuesday on their investigation’s findings, the fire’s probable cause and any recommendations that could potentially prevent further incidents. NTSB investigators said in a report released last month that the cause remains undetermined but a possible ignition point was phones and other electronics plugged into outlets. One crew member told authorities he saw sparks when he plugged in his cellphone hours before the fire. Five crew members, including Capt. Jerry Boylan, were asleep above deck when the fire broke out — an apparent violation of Coast Guard regulations requiring a roving watch — and managed to escape by jumping into the water. Authorities said they repeatedly tried in vain to save the others. The surviving crew members also told investigators they were never instructed on emergency procedures. The NTSB is a federal regulatory agency but it has no enforcement powers and can only submit its suggestions to bodies like the Federal Aviation Administration or the Coast Guard, which have repeatedly rejected some of the board’s safety recommendations after other disasters. The Coast Guard has, however, issued additional safety recommendations following the Conception fire, such as limiting charging of lithium-ion batteries and the use of power strips and extension cords. Officials must take into account the potential impact of a proposed recommendation on the boating community, said Kyle McAvoy, a marine safety specialist with Robson Forensic in Philadelphia.

Footage of Chicago off-duty officer fired a shot at burglars as they escape, Illinois. On Aug. 31, the officer encountered two people who had broken into a garage. The suspects ran and the officer fired his gun as he chased after the burglars, COPA said. No injuries were reported. COPA did not disclose the location of the #shooting. Video of the incident shows two people rush out of an open garage into an alley and jump inside a dark-colored vehicle. The off-duty officer, who appears shirtless, emerges from the garage and fires a shot at the car as it speeds off.

Community members in Illinois gathered Friday night to raise money and show support for local police officers and first responders. “Branded as a ‘Back The Blue First Responder Appreciation Event,’ it was organized in this [sic] summer in the wake of calls for police reform across the country as a way to show community support for first responders and law enforcement in the Effingham area.” Originally planned as a rally, the gathering later turned into a neighborhood block party and fundraiser concert. Bruce Cox, who emceed the event alongside his daughter, told the outlet, “My grandfather was a deputy sheriff. My father was a firefighter. It’s been in my blood.” “I’m into law and order. It just has to happen,” he continued, adding, “When everyone else is running out, they’re running in.” (Read more on BREITBART.)

HOUSTON - Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo says a suspect has been taken into custody after two police officers were shot in southwest Houston. The shooting occurred in the 2600 block of Holly Hall on Tuesday morning. Chief Acevedo wrote on Twitter, "We have had two officers struck by gunfire. Please pray! More to follow.” Just before 10 a.m., HPD said SWAT was responding to the scene for a possible barricaded suspect. Around 10:30 a.m., Chief Acevedo said the suspect was taken into custody. HPD said the suspect was being transported to the hospital. The conditions of the wounded officers have not been released. Chief Acevedo is scheduled to provide an update from the hospital at 12:30 p.m. 🙏🏼

LOS ANGELES - Gun sales are up nationwide amid the COVID-19 pandemic, including among women. At Ade’s Gun Shop in Orange County, owner Emily Atkinson can’t keep up with demand – she's seeing a run on guns during this pandemic, similar to the run on toilet paper. "We would put 20 guns out and they would be sold in three hours," Atkinson said. "We were doing in two weeks what we would do in a quarter." "Every single person coming in are first time buyers... mostly women," she added. In California this year, 43% of gun buyers are first-time gun owners. "With COVID and everything that’s going on, you start feeling a little vulnerable and I thought 'I want to feel I could protect myself' if I needed to," said first-time gun owner Susan Morehead. MIAMI - A uniformed police officer in Miami is under investigation after he was photographed wearing a pro-Trump mask at an early voting site. The photo was taken on Monday, the first day of early voting, by Steve Simeonidis, the chair of the Miami-Dade Democratic Party. The photo showed Officer Daniel Ubeda wearing the face-covering at the Miami Government Center. The mask read, "Trump 2020, no more bullshit." “This is city-funded voter intimidation,” Simeonidis tweeted. “Ubeda should be suspended immediately." Miami police said it was aware of the photo, calling the officer's behavior "unacceptable" and "a violation of departmental policy." City of Miami Mayor Francis Suarez said he and Chief of Police Jorge Colina agreed that the officer's behavior was "unacceptable and "a violation of departmental policy." "He is under investigation and disciplinary measures will be taken," Suarez said. #facepalm

Proud Boy Alan Swinney denied release, described as a ‘lightning rod’ for violence, OregonLive reported. Self-proclaimed Proud Boy Alan J. Swinney, accused of firing a paintball gun at counterprotesters and aiming a revolver at others with his finger on the trigger in downtown Portland, remains in custody with a $534,000 bail after a judge denied his motion for release. Swinney, 50, has pleaded not guilty to a 12-count indictment on charges including second-degree assault, unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful use of mace, pointing a gun at another person and menacing. Multnomah County prosecutors said Swinney’s bail shouldn’t be reduced, citing his social media posts where he’s called the conflict between right-wing and left-wing activists a “civil war” and bragged about his access to guns.

Fatal OIS of 21 yr Cesar Vargas for charging at officer w/ knife. San Francisco, CA. A 21-year-old man who died in a police #shooting earlier this month allegedly ran toward an officer while wielding a knife before being shot, police said Monday during a town hall meeting. The suspect, later identified as Cesar Vargas of Fairfield, died in the Oct. 10 officer-involved shooting on the first block of Otis Street. During the town hall, police revealed that before officers encountered Vargas, he attempted to open the doors of several cars near the area of Market and Valencia streets. According to police, around 11:25 p.m., Vargas stood in front of a Toyota Prius that was stopped at a red light and jumped on the hood, yelling for the driver to get out and shattering the car’s windshield. Vargas then allegedly held a knife to the victim’s face and pulled her out of the driver’s seat. (Read the Full Story.)

Charles Pearce Jr., 59, of Gulf Shores was driving a car-hauler semi when a hit-and-run driver sparked the crash which sent the truck over the barrier, falling 25 feet.
