ATLANTA - Atlanta police say they have made an arrest in the shooting death of actor Thomas Jefferson Byrd. Antonio Demetrice Rhynes, 30, of Atlanta, is facing felony murder charges in connection to the case. Byrd was shot and killed in southwest Atlanta on October 4. The 70-year-old actor was found unresponsive in the front yard of a home on Belvedere Avenue with multiple gunshot wounds to his back. He died at the scene. Byrd had appeared in a number of films over the years, many directed by Spike Lee, and was nominated for a Tony award in 2003. Rhynes was identified as a suspect and located Friday morning at the Royal Oaks Apartments off North Camp Creek Parkway. He was taken into custody without incident. Rhynes faces charges of felony murder. Police have not released a motive for the crime.

NAPA COUNTY, California -- Authorities in Napa County released video on Wednesday showing a deputy fatally shoot a man who was unarmed — but whom authorities said ignored commands and “aggressively” approached the sheriff’s deputy with his arm behind his back. Napa County sheriff’s officials said the Oct. 5 incident that resulted in the death of Juan Adrian Garcia began when Sgt. David Ackman pulled Garcia over for not having his headlights on. DETROIT — People will not be allowed to openly carry firearms at polling places, clerks offices or locations where absentee ballots are counted, Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced Friday. Benson included the decision in guidance sent to Michigan clerks as elections officials prepare for any voter intimidation efforts on election day, Nov. 3. “Fair, free and secure elections are the foundation of our democracy,” Benson said in a news release. “I am committed to ensuring all eligible Michigan citizens can freely exercise their fundamental right to vote without fear of threats, intimidation or harassment. Prohibiting the open-carry of firearms in areas where citizens cast their ballots is necessary to ensure every voter is protected.” The directive states that no one may openly carry a firearm within 100 feet of a polling place, clerk’s office or absentee ballot counting board. It requires clerks to post signage noting the rule and to contact law enforcement if there are any violations. Additional guidance from the state to law enforcement on possible safety and security issues on election day is expected soon. There are thousands of polling places around the state, many located at schools, churches or similar venues. Although President Trump has bashed mail-in voting and encouraged supporters to vote in person on election day, he has also called for an “army” of supporters to monitor voting at the polls. This has prompted concerns there may be an increase of voter intimidation, especially in a state like Michigan that was decided by only 10,704 votes in 2016. The guidance to clerks did not cite any specific portion of Michigan law or any state rule that gives the secretary of state the authority to ban the open carry of firearms.

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Police Department has informed all its officers that they may need to reschedule any vacations around election day as the agency prepares for possible protests or other unrest. Law enforcement sources said the department does not have any specific intelligence suggesting problems but that the bulletin was put out to be prepared for any contingencies. #LAPD officers put in for days off typically months in advance, but top LAPD brass has informed officers in a letter that it has designated Nov. 2 to 9 as a "special event," with modified hours and limited time off for anyone. Election day is Nov. 3. "We would be foolish not to make sure we had resources available," said Josh Rubenstein, the department's communications director. "We want to make sure we have people available. This is not a full mobilization."

A man described by U.S. prosecutors as a neo-Nazi and white supremacist pleaded guilty on Thursday to a hate crime for plotting to bomb a historic Colorado synagogue last year, FOX News reported. Richard Holzer, 28, pleaded guilty to attempting to stop people from exercising their religion with an explosive or fire and attempting to destroy a building used in interstate commerce in a plea deal with prosecutors. While each of the two crimes carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison, prosecutors in return promised not to ask a judge to impose a sentence of more than 20 years when Holzer is sentenced Jan. 21. Holzer was arrested Nov. 1, 2019 after receiving phony pipe bombs and dynamite from undercover FBI agents he had been meeting with. After his arrest, Holzer told police that he did not plan to hurt anyone by bombing the synagogue in the middle of the night, but acknowledged he would have gone ahead with his plan if the building had been occupied because anyone there would be Jewish.

The president of New York City’s largest police union blasted City Hall for “amateur-hour meddling” with day-to-day procedures after the #NYPD’s chief of patrol resigned over tensions with Mayor Bill de Blasio. “This is what happens when elected officials play political games with police department operations,” NYC Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch said in a statement Wednesday. “Our top talent in all ranks is being driven out the door and public safety is suffering.”
