San Jose police officers shot and killed a man last year as he drove a stolen car into a police sergeant, the District Attorney’s Office has determined. In the late morning of May 4, 2019, Efren Esquivel, 24, stole a sheriff’s deputy’s personal car as it idled unoccupied outside her home. After being found, he refused to surrender when surrounded by officers and then tried to smash his way out of the blockade with the car. Before he ran over the officer he yelled, “You’re gonna have to shoot me” or “You’re gonna have to kill me.” An autopsy determined that Esquivel was intoxicated with “a near-toxic” level of methamphetamines. Prosecutor Rob Baker wrote in the 30-page r eport : “When he drove at Sergeant (James) Mason at high speed, the officers had no other recourse to save Sergeant Mason than to discharge their firearms." An investigation has been launched in New York City after a car drove through a crowd of Black Lives Matter demonstrators and left them desperately screaming for medics. Authorities said the frightening incident happened on Thursday evening in Times Square during a protest over the death of Daniel Prude, a 41-year-old man who suffocated to death while in police custody. The anti-racism demonstration was met with counter-protesters in the form of President Trump and Back the Blue supporters, authorities said. Portland shooting suspect allegedly killed by feds after admitting to crime in interview
At least one suspect was in custody in Cleveland early Friday after a veteran police officer was shot and killed Thursday night, according to reports. Killed in the shooting was Officer James Skernivitz, 53, who had been with the department since 1998. It was unclear if the arrested suspect was believed to have pulled the trigger, police were questioning several suspects in all, the news station reported. “Cleveland lost one of its finest in the line of duty,” police Chief Calvin Williams said. “He was out doing what all police officers do – trying to protect the people of our city – and he gave his life.” The chief described the shooting victim as an “excellent” member of the force. The police officer had been riding in a patrol car that was fired upon several times, with the car crashing, sources told the station. The officer died of his wounds after being transported to a hospital. #RIP
