LAKE CITY, Florida -- An officer from the Lake City Police Department was shot Tuesday while responding to reports of gunshots in a neighborhood east of downtown. According to an LCPD news release, officers got word of gunshots in the area of northeast Webster Avenue and northeast Jenkins Lane shortly after 1:30 a.m. When they arrived, the agency's statement said, they found a home with bullet holes outside.

Evacuations were ordered in one California community after a wildfire broke out Tuesday, as firefighters continue to battle blazes elsewhere in the state. CAL Fire said the Branch Fire has burned at least 3,022 acres in San Luis Obispo County and is only 50 percent contained as of Wednesday morning.The San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office said several areas near the fire have been evacuated. Cal Fire said as of Wednesday morning, two structures and 10 outbuildings have been destroyed. Highway 58, however, remains open. The Branch Fire began on Tuesday and has destroyed two structures so far. The cause of the fire was still being investigated. In the northern part of the state, firefighters gained ground on a large wildfire, but weather conditions were less favorable on Wednesday. Another blaze, the 34-square-mile Gold Fire in northern Lassen County, was 70 percent contained on Wednesday.

A man who shot and wounded two demonstrators at a protest in Colorado over the weekend has been arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide. Samuel Young, 23, was taken into custody on Monday in the Denver suburb of Wheat Ridge. Investigators said Young was among the hundreds of protesters who were blocking Interstate 225 in neighboring Aurora on Saturday when a Jeep managed to pass through barricades and barreled toward the crowd. Young allegedly raised his rifle and was aiming at the Jeep when he opened fire, striking one male protester in the leg and grazing another man's head. 'It was the most reckless thing I have seen in a long time,' Aurora's Deputy Chief Harry Glidden said. Investigators are still trying to determine why the driver of the Jeep sped into the protesters as they demonstrated the death of Elijah McClain, a black man who died after being stopped by police in Aurora last year. No one was struck by the vehicle as the crowds parted in time.
